Toilet training help!

DD is 2.5, on Sat decided she was done with nappies. She’s staying dry for a few hours at a time but doesn’t seem to entirely connect when she needs to go. She says several times she wants to go toilet but then nothing comes. We read or sing to give more time. Then we’re finally putting her sleep sack on for her nap and she wees in her pants. We made it for one wee and one poo so far, she said it was a bit frightening but I hugged her and praised her. She also had a bit of constipation so the poo was a bit hard, don’t think that helped. She let me put a nappy on overnight but otherwise is refusing them.

Do I just keep going like this? How long will it take for her to understand what to do? She’s back at nursery tomorrow, do I send her in pants or a nappy pants?

She's doing well! Send her to nursery in pants or she'll get confused. And send pairs of spare pants too. You could start encouraging her to sit on the loo at regular times - when she gets up, before and after meals, before she has her nap - as well as when she asks. It's asking quite a lot at this stage to expect her to know when she needs to go. As to how long, children vary. A week is quick, several is fine.

Okay I’ll have to do the washing not sure I have enough pants! But we’ll give it a good go! Thank you!

Definitely take her lead on it, if she’s refusing nappies just go with it. Hopefully nursery will be supportive tomorrow? Send lots of spares!
Both mine were trained when they decided they were done with nappies, and got it within a week. I think the idea coming from them is half the battle
