NC as embarrassed. I put £10 on my electric last night and it's all gone.

I was worried before that the landlord was doing something illegal but now I'm pretty sure. I wasn't even there last night so I just recharged £10 then left.

What do I do about it? I can't afford £300 per month for a small flat

Call your energy provider, tell them what's been going on and ask them to investigate.

RealityContinuesToRuinMyLife · 20/04/2025 15:07

What electrical items, apart from fridge, were plugged in?
Is the water heated by immersion heater?
Is your heating gas or electricity?
How much are the standing charges?
Had you previously used emergency electricity so owed some maybe?

maybe start taking a meter reading when you leave and then again when you get home and you could contact the provider to get advice about meter tampering/energy theft or why so much is used.

I'd check by switching off absolutely everything at the wall (including the fridge temporarily, it won't hurt for half an hour) and then read the meter. Read it again 30 minutes later and see whether it has moved. If it has, then there's something using electricity somewhere.

smurfmonkey · 20/04/2025 15:38

How long have you lived there? If it's not very long then it's possible there's a previous debt on the meter that your credit being used up on.

Uselesszebra · 20/04/2025 15:40

It's all electrity, only fridge freezer and one plug socket on. Thing is I don't know who provider is as landlord keeps the bills and I top up as required.

I wasn't expecting £10 to go last night overnight 8.43pm as I topped up then went. I'm sure this isn't right

How do u top up? With a key you yake ro the shop? Does it not say on the receipt who you are paying? I don't have a meter so not sure how it works but worth having a look?

Stripeyanddotty · 20/04/2025 15:47

Is it a legal tenancy?

BlondeMummyto1 · 20/04/2025 15:48

Did you owe anything? £5-£10 is standard cost of those ore payment metres.

They used to cost me a fortune in a previous rented property.

That’s very unwise. He may be in a lot of debt which you could be repaying.

Yes I have the receipt from yesterday. I'm upset as my food is ruined now. I shouldn't have to pay £10 for one day, that's £300 a month

I only called in today to briefly pick up leggings and was quite horrified

It's a bit of a faff as you'll first have to find network distributor but hopefully they should have a link on their website to find your supplier. My distributor is National Grid who have a link

Good luck!

Is an electricity provider collecting debt?

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 20/04/2025 16:13

What sort of meter have you got? Does it give the credit added when you actuakky credit it? How do you credit it? Some answers to these questions might actually let us help OP.
