Extreme bloating - causes? Solutions?

For a few months, maybe a year I've been getting random bloating that makes my stomach so big my usually quite loose clothes don't fit anymore. If it happens when I'm wearing jeans I literally have to go home and change because of the pain of it.
It is connected with eating (is doesn't happen when I fast) but there doesn't seem to be a specific trigger food. I'm 47 so possibly in peri.
Any advice? Solutions? Does this happen to anyone else?

Gluten

Lioncubhearted · 20/04/2025 05:12

Same, I've come to the conclusion it's gluten and especially noticable if I have some for breakfast.

Have you been checked over by the dr. Just thinking bloating is often related to ovarian problems 😊

Possibly gastritis if you have been unable to figure out a specific food trigger.

For me it was definitely gluten, turns out I have coeliac disease. Gluten is in all sorts of unexpected places, so you might not even know you're eating it.

Have you tried an elimination diet?

TaranFollt · 20/04/2025 07:22

Same.
Eating mainly gluten free helps and keeping myself regular essential.

Cut gluten out for a few months and see if that helps.
I had this happen last week, pain was awful and only thing I’d eaten that was different was couscous salad.

Bloating should be considered a red flag, so might want to check with the GP.

But in terms of food - have you ever tried a time without the common culprits?

whatwasthatnoise · 20/04/2025 07:32

Please don't cut gluten from your diet until you've spoken to your GP. You need to be eating lots of gluten for a blood test for Coeliac Disease to be accurate. If you cut out gluten yourself, you would need to start eating it again to be tested and diagnosed.

Please go to the doctor. It's probably just diet related but bloating can be a sign of more serious problems so you should get it checked out.

Thanks, I think I might try to get a docs appointment.
Gluten is a possibility but I think I eat that pretty continuously so not sure why it would happen some times and not others. I also don't get the runs which I think is a coeliac thing it's just (tmi) vast amounts of gas.
