Do you take your handbag up to bed?

I have taken to carrying a backpack this holiday as we are out and about a lot. (Normally I have a work bag or weekend handbag).
I normally bring up my book, tablet for kindle and my phone, and a bottle of water, bad maybe a notebook. I have just had a revelation that most of these things are in my backpack as we have just got in, so I have just brought the whole thing up. It has jogged a memory that lots of people do this I think - maybe older people?

It seems strange to have an outside bag this far up - we are in the loft!

What do others do?

I leave my bag downstairs but I always take my purse and my work laptop upstairs. I don't really know why, maybe so they're harder to find and steal?!

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/04/2025 22:38

I don't own a handbag.
I leave my bag downstairs, and it has my purse in it.
Keys are also downstairs in a key box on the wall

Bags and key box are not visible from the front door, and you can't see inside the door from the road either.
I do have a book (or three) beside the bed, plus a drink of water and reading glasses. My phone is also beside the bed as I use it for the alarms in the morning.

bigdinkydoodah · 19/04/2025 22:38

When at home I just leave everything downstairs apart from my phone, I take this to bed as we no longer have a house phone (elderly parents able to reach me if needed). On holiday I take everything into the bedroom with me.

HeddaGarbled · 19/04/2025 22:40

I keep mine on the top shelf of my wardrobe so it’ll be there already from when I got in. It’s my phone that moves about the house with me, not my bag.

Elfie111 · 19/04/2025 22:41

I remember my Nan doing this. I think it’s like an old person thing. I don’t mean that in anyway offensively. I am myself getting on a bit.

Seagreensmokeyblue · 19/04/2025 22:41

Yes my handbag is always upstairs when I'm at home, and that includes all night.

I had it ingrained in me from when I was younger that from a security point of view I shouldn't leave valuables lying around downstairs.

MaggieLouLove · 19/04/2025 22:41

i normally just take it up with me. never thought about it 🤷‍♀️ if i need it… i’ll take it up with me!! 🤣🤣

unlikelychump · 19/04/2025 22:42

The advice these days is to leave keys etc downstairs, and I do. I don't carry a purse. It is very convenient but I feel like I am in a hotel or something!

At home I have my phone and iPad, my wallet is left out side, hidden but I never keep too much money in it. Unless I know I need a large amount which I will refill in the morning. When I’m on holiday everything stays next to me.

Ollybob · 19/04/2025 22:44

Preferably you want burglars to see your purse/bag/keys then grab and go not go hunting for them in your bedroom at night!

Whynotaxthisyear · 19/04/2025 22:45

I don't think about bringing valuables upstairs at night. I leave the front door key in the lock in case of fire.

DiscoBeat · 19/04/2025 22:45

I've never taken my handbag upstairs, that's hanging by the front door. I do take my phone up though. My laptop stays in the office downstairs.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 19/04/2025 22:46

No I don't but I remember my mum doing it. She would always sweep the kitchen floor before going to bed (no idea why) and there she'd be sweeping away with her handbag swinging around on her shoulder!

Cynic17 · 19/04/2025 22:46

My handbag is always in my bedroom, including at night. It only moves when I actually leaves the house.
Where else would I put it? It's safely out of the way upstairs, and not cluttering up the living room. And my keys are always in it too, so I never lose them.

BurntBroccoli · 19/04/2025 22:48

My bags are always upstairs with me in my bedroom. Car keys too.

Femalefootyfan · 19/04/2025 22:48

My handbag stays downstairs, my phone and iPad are also downstairs charging overnight but I have been thinking lately that I should probably take my phone upstairs to my bedroom as I don’t have a landline so if I was needed overnight, I wouldn’t hear my phone.

The front door key stays in the door lock during the night so we know exactly where it is in the event of having to leave in an emergency. Both sets of car keys are on hooks in the hall but not in sight or reach of anyone except us.

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 19/04/2025 22:51

No, mine stays downstairs, I leave the house multiple times a day but often don't go upstairs much in between it would be annoying taking it up and down. I take my phone and diary up because I use them both before bed but the bag stays down as do the keys.

BurntBroccoli · 19/04/2025 22:52

People don’t carry that much cash any more though - so presumably burglars don’t bother with handbags either.

They would however like jewellery, cameras, laptops etc which may be upstairs.

AllotmentTime · 19/04/2025 22:53

I read the title and thought "that's an old lady thing" 🤣 no I don't, but we're at MIL's at the moment and she carries hers around the house with her. I don't really get it. Whatever she wants is rarely in there anyway.
That said, I might on holiday, because it might be holding eg lip balm/ tissues / etc which I didn't have anywhere else in a holiday house.

ETA I think there's a difference between carrying it to whatever room you're in, and the fact that it's "home" might be in your bedroom. The latter is probably pretty common.

healthybychristmas · 20/04/2025 07:35

No, if I had a burglar I'd rather they found it immediately and left.

Ilovelowry · 20/04/2025 07:40

The advice is to leave everything as easy to find, so a burglar takes your stuff easily and doesn't have to come further into the house to find it - And then you.

So no I don't take anything upstairs except my phone and inhaler.

MyFavouriteSpoon · 20/04/2025 07:42

Having had my car stolen off the drive in the night before, I'd rather a burglar just took the car and left. I can replace my bag and car, I can't replace me, my kids or my sentimental jewellery. Keys are left near the door, so that we can get out in a fire and also so that any burglar just takes the car and goes. Bag is hung up in the hallway but without valuables in it. I rarely take my purse out nowadays as I just pay with my phone so it lives in a drawer with nothing but store cards and a driving licence in it. Phone is my alarm clock.

LaMarschallin · 20/04/2025 08:47

When I come in I usually go upstairs to take my shoes off (plus coat if I'm wearing one) and I take my bag up at the same time.
All my bags live in a cupboard in my bedroom and I don't always take the same one out so it makes sense to have it there in case I want to swap the contents over.
Where do people leave their bags who don't put them in the bedroom? In the hall or sitting room? Genuine question as I've never really thought about it before.

Sunnyside4 · 20/04/2025 08:51

I tend to keep most of my shoes and coats upstairs, so I take it upstairs with me when I put those away. Also, sometimes I swap things into my backpack or cards around and they're kept upstairs to easier.

EffortlesslyDecluttering · 20/04/2025 08:58

All downstairs here, the only shoes and coats kept upstairs are out of season or occasional use ones. My bag tends to live on the hall table during the day and I put it on a hook at night for tidiness. There is a basket in the hall table where I put things in and out of the bag when I am coming and going to different places (eg I take my coin purse out unless we are going to the pub quiz where we pay cash). I have a couple of alternative bags on the hooks in the hall too. Plus we have lots of coat hooks and shoe storage.
