Do you take your handbag up to bed?

I have taken to carrying a backpack this holiday as we are out and about a lot. (Normally I have a work bag or weekend handbag).
I normally bring up my book, tablet for kindle and my phone, and a bottle of water, bad maybe a notebook. I have just had a revelation that most of these things are in my backpack as we have just got in, so I have just brought the whole thing up. It has jogged a memory that lots of people do this I think - maybe older people?

It seems strange to have an outside bag this far up - we are in the loft!

What do others do?

Yes we were burgled while we slept about ten years ago so everything comes up at night

DoNoTakeNo · 20/04/2025 09:01

I never leave anything of value downstairs - not car keys, wallets, cards or handbags.

Despite good home security (& a big dog!) there’s too much risk associated with easy access to valuables.

Eastereggs2025 · 20/04/2025 09:23

Whilst I keep a lot in my safe primarily I do keep my car keys pretty much on the side not visible to passers by but if somebody wants to break in and take the cars let them we will get that sorted but I don't want the house trashing and us trashing whilst they do it.

BatchCookBabe · 20/04/2025 09:24

Never. My nan (born 1920s) used to though.

SpottyBumPony · 20/04/2025 09:25

No, I'd rather a thief stole it easily than them coming in to my bedroom while I'm asleep. And yes, I've been asleep in a house that was burgled and had stuff stolen.

mindutopia · 20/04/2025 09:26

No 😂 actually I usually leave it in the car, which is unlocked. We don’t lock the house at night either. We live so rurally that literally no one would ever have any interest in stealing anything but a bit of farm machinery. And we are so awkward to get to that no one ever attempts to come down our drive. If they did, the massive security light that comes on and the obvious camera that takes their picture would turn them right around. My in-laws only lock the house about once a year when they go on holiday and it’s always a struggle to find the keys. I do bring my phone in with me, but purse and wallet mostly live in the boot.

StarlightLady · 20/04/2025 09:28

I always have my phone, driving licence and bank cards on my bedside table.

BigDahliaFan · 20/04/2025 09:32

I don’t have a handbag. But no I wouldn’t if I did. My phone comes upstairs on days I need an alarm…otherwise it’s downstairs. Which I like after years of having to be glued to it for emergency call reasons with seriously I’ll relatives. There’s a freedom to not having it there tinged with a bit of sadness.

Arlanymor · 20/04/2025 09:35

I don’t have a downstairs, it’s all on one level. My handbag lives on a chair in the corner of my bedroom. Keys lock up behind me and then go in a box overnight in the hallway. Phone goes on charge, everything else stays in the handbag and then either gets decanted into an alternative handbag in the morning or just gets reused.

RainySummer01 · 20/04/2025 09:35

Well I never have but for a few weeks we have had workmen in the house so I started taking my bag upstairs rather than leave it around and now they have gone I have kept it up!

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 20/04/2025 09:40

Handbag collection lives (usually have at least 3 on the go) in the study at home along with my laptop, phone is usually in my pocket or beside me during the day, at night I lock the front door and take the keys and phone to bed with me. I’ve had a car taken from the street outside, they didn’t need the keys.

On holiday I take my whole handbag to bed with me.

My mum (mid 80s) has never taken her handbag to bed, hers is always in her study too, if we are lucky she does take her phone and sometimes she even remembers it is better if you charge it!

Endofyear · 20/04/2025 09:44

I never bring my handbag upstairs, it's hanging up in the hallway with my purse and keys in. I bring my phone up to bed at night as we don't have a landline. It's just easier to have my bag there to grab on my way out the door, I don't need it when I'm in the house! My mum always has hers beside her wherever she is, no idea why!

softlyfallsthesnow · 20/04/2025 09:49

After some car thefts in the street the police advised us to leave car keys near the front door so that you didn't wake up to an unfriendly stranger with a crowbar in your bedroom!
They can have my handbag too as it's downstairs.

Pandimoanymum · 20/04/2025 09:58

Yes, I do. Ever since we were burgled about 20 years ago, whilst we were sleeping upstairs and they stole a handbag that I'd left downstairs. Luckily it was empty and it was pure chance that I'd taken the bag with my purse etc in upstairs, as normally my 'main' bag would have been downstairs and they'd have had that too.
I take the whole bag because it's got work phone, work laptop, car keys and purse in, so I can't be bothered taking those things in and out each night. Plus I'm forgetful so I might leave something behind.

HopingForTheBest25 · 20/04/2025 10:00

I take my handbag upstairs - it seems more sensible than taking individual items out, that I might need, to carry separately.
Also I change handbags frequently, so I want everything upstairs so I can swap from one to the other more easily,

hopeishere · 20/04/2025 10:33

I leave everything downstairs. I put my phone away about 7pm on a charger in the kitchen. I’ve stopped really using a handbag.

A colleague carries hers with her all day so if you go to a different room for a meeting she brings her bag, despite the office being secure.

PenguinChops · 20/04/2025 10:36

I wouldn’t ever do this. Leave your keys and purse downstairs. In the u fortunate event that you have burglars in your house, you don’t want to risk them rifling about in your bedroom

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/04/2025 10:36

No, I usually leave mine downstairs, but not as a matter of policy. I find the idea of it being strange to have 'outdoor bags' higher up in the house really weird though!

TammyJones · 20/04/2025 10:58

HeddaGarbled · 19/04/2025 22:40

I keep mine on the top shelf of my wardrobe so it’ll be there already from when I got in. It’s my phone that moves about the house with me, not my bag.

Bottom of my wardrobe.

TammyJones · 20/04/2025 11:00

Cynic17 · 19/04/2025 22:46

My handbag is always in my bedroom, including at night. It only moves when I actually leaves the house.
Where else would I put it? It's safely out of the way upstairs, and not cluttering up the living room. And my keys are always in it too, so I never lose them.

This is the logic I share as dh doesn’t always lock the door when he’s home (locked at night though )

homeedmam · 20/04/2025 11:01

TennesseeStella · 19/04/2025 22:35

I leave my bag downstairs but I always take my purse and my work laptop upstairs. I don't really know why, maybe so they're harder to find and steal?!

If someone breaks in while I'm asleep I definitely do not want them searching through the house and possibly coming into bedrooms!

BitOutOfPractice · 20/04/2025 11:02

I don’t have an upstairs. Problem solved! 😬

HumerousHumous · 20/04/2025 11:20

Yes have done this for years after neighbour had her house broken into.
I went to a Met. Police event a few weeks after this happened where they were promoting home safety and emphasising the importance of always taking your keys and other valuables to bed. Losing the cars - and cards and the financial implications of that, would be a nightmare to deal with.

Obvnotthegolden · 20/04/2025 11:35

My handbag stays downstairs but I have a tote bag that I'll sometimes use to carry things up and down with me if I'm going through a phase where I have a lot to carry around.

Although now I usually have double of the little things, even glasses, lip balm, hair bands, water bottle, pen etc so it's just carrying my phone, tablet and kindle.

Can't imagine having my handbag upstairs tbh!

BoarBrush · 20/04/2025 11:36

I probably would if I had been out out and went straight to bed when I got home. Otherwise no, my whole 3 handbag collection stays in the shoe cupboard.

My granny did though.
