Premium bonds - 25 years

Mumzpotty · 19/04/2025 22:26

I've recently found the number for a small amount of premium bonds my nanna bought for me 25 years ago (only £100).

They've never been checked for any wins, what are the chances I might have won a few quid here and there with such a low investment? 😯

I've sent off a form to register for online access, just curious of what people think I'm going to find 😆

Not a penny? Or maybe a little bit extra?

Wouldn’t they have written to you?

Mumzpotty · 19/04/2025 22:30

I'm not sure! The account was opened when I was around 11/12 🤣

I've had £50 for maybe 35 years and have won nothing. A terrible investment in terms of inflation! I think you need a greater investment to get a similar return to a savings account.

A family member has a large amount of premium bonds and regularly has wins. Like you, I've got £100 worth, which I've had for around 20 years and i have never won anything.

My husband and his sister had £100 for at least that length of time. Only one has ever won - £100. Hopefully you are luckier.

I tried this but it says anything older than 18 months I'd need to log in?

Very hit and miss from everyone else - apparently there's £97 million in unclaimed prizes out there!

Ah cool. Well good luck. The odds are against you having one much, if anything, with that level of investment but hey, you only need one 🤑

Hortus · 19/04/2025 22:45

My daughter was given £100 in bonds on her 18th birthday which was 17 years ago. A couple of months ago a prize cheque for £100 came through my door. That was her first and only win, she had forgotten she had them and hadn't bothered to change her address.
I've got about £30k and get a prize most months, never won big though. My mother has maximum holding of £50k and on average has made slightly more than if it had been in savings. The thought of a possible big win makes me keep it in there.

Bjorkdidit · 20/04/2025 05:59

You never know OP. Chances are you've won nothing but if you look at the published lists of big prizes, every so often a small holding from years ago wins £100k or similar.

Eg in April, 4 people with £100 or less won £5k to £25k.

You might have won something. DS(16) has £609, built up over his lifetime, but had won £200 over the last 10 years or so.

Perhaps all of that £97 million belongs to you ! 😂

They would have contacted you by now if you’ve won.

DustyLee123 · 20/04/2025 07:57

I had a few premium bonds for 50 years and never won a penny. It only when I bought some more that I won £50.

PloopDeck · 20/04/2025 08:00

Same happened to me.. had £100 18 years ago, and forgot. Had dreams I’d won big and never knew… but no, earlier this year I re registered and when the letter came through, I still only had £100, zero wins! I’m keeping the £100 in there though! We all like a bit of ‘what if!!’
Good luck though OP! Someone’s gotta win!

thornbury · 20/04/2025 08:01

DH and I both have the maximum holding, so do both my parents. There are months where at least one of us wins nothing, but usually 3 out of 4 of us will get a win. We've had our three years and even with the total wins between us we've never surpassed 500 pounds in one month. Still hoping for the million so we can buy DD a flat!

enigmainthemist · 20/04/2025 08:04

I have 35k in premium bonds and opened it in January of this year. I've won every single month so far - total £500. I think to win anything you have to have a significant amount in there

ShodAndShadySenators · 20/04/2025 08:06

DH and I have the maximum, DS has about £34K worth. Most months we win something - last draw was DH £175, DS £150 and £125 in mine. It's always amazing when someone with very few bonds wins a big prize, or someone who only just bought theirs gets a good win, but it must be rare compared to the ones who've got a reasonable amount with higher chances.

It's one of those things, a different investment form could make more interest over the year, but it's the chance of winning a top prize that keeps it there! I hope you find you've got a few wins in there OP

ElsaSnow · 20/04/2025 08:10

All 3 of our children were given £100 of premium bonds when born (they are all under 16 still) - the oldest and youngest have never won, the middle won £25 a few years ago and then the other month £50! I won £500 the other month and I have less than £10k in mine. I’ve had them a couple of years and have a couple of months where I win nothing but usually will £50 £100 most months, so for me it’s been better than the interest it was getting in savings.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 20/04/2025 08:29

@Mumzpotty you can get your online access by doing it online. you dont have to send anything away!

nearly55 · 20/04/2025 08:29

You might be lucky! My grandmother bought me £3 of bonds in the late 60s and about 10 years ago I got a cheque in the post for £25!

Dahliasrule · 20/04/2025 08:31

Take heart. We have had a very few for about forty years and two months ago DH won £25. Not sure what the annual rate of interest would be!

Playmobil4Eva · 20/04/2025 08:33

I transferred £500 from Lloyds to PB for my daughter and she she won £500 the next month! I wish that that has started a pattern!

Nourishinghandcream · 20/04/2025 08:45

I had PB's given to me as a christening present in 1965 but they have never won anything.

Still a lover of PB's though, both OH & I have max holdings and win every month but checking the history, my christening PB's are not the winning ones.☹️
