Ideas for my 40th

I don't usually end up doing much for my birthday and often feel a little deflated but tend to brush it off. Anyway I'm 40 next month and I would really like to do something for one but I'm not sure what!

There are a few restrictions:

  • Can't go on holiday as DH is having to go away with his family shortly before and can't take any more annual leave
  • No party as the friends I have are very geographically spread out and I don't think everyone would want to/be able to travel
  • Feel obliged to spend it with DH and DD (8) so something that would work for that.

I'm just not sure what I'd like to do. I have a few ideas in mind but not sure logistically if they'd work so looking to MN hive mind for inspiration. I don't want to be Birthdayzilla but "Went to Nando's" feels like a bit of a shitty answer when someone asks "What did you do for your 40th?"

Theatre show or afternoon tea.

Get your hair / nails in the morning or go for a massage.
lunch somewhere really nice - a lot of top end restaurants are much better value at lunchtime and would be fine to take DS.
home for cake and fizz

I’m also thinking of ideas for mine. Was also going to say theatre and dinner. Matilda? Or Lion King?
could you have a solo spa morning and meet DH and DC for an afternoon tea?
Kew Gardens or similar
night over in a city - London? Not sure where you are.

what things do you like? Are you a sightseeing person? Nature lover? Would a zoo work for a nice day out?

Can you recommend any restaurants?? (Sorry to jump on but could help us both!)

Oh I am in Yorkshire so theatres are a bit hit and miss!

I like doing things. Sort of adrenaline junkie I guess, I really really would like to do that zip wire in Wales, Velocity I think it’s called, but it’s not really suitable for my daughter so I don’t think it will be possible.

Sounds fun!! Could they watch and do something together after?

Night away in Keswick in an Airbnb or one of the spa hotels. Go to Honister, DH and DD can explore the mine while you do the via ferrata. Can do a fell walk the next day or mooch round Keswick or go on the launch across the lake. Lots of nice restaurants but everywhere is quite relaxed so it’s fun and fine to take kids

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 17/04/2025 21:14

theres the adrenaline quarry which would have zip wires and stuff which your dd could also do. There’s also a big inflatable water park there. It’s great fun but it’s in Cornwall and I see you’re up north. Could you manage a weekend away? It’s a bit of a treck though for just a night.

id probably go and see a show or something. I’m off to Crete for my 40th with DH and older teen/ adult dds. I booked it to avoid the plans my sister would have made 😂.

For my birthdays recently (I’m in 40s) I have gone camping, walked a peak challenge, had a make over at Charlotte Tilbury. I would love to do something completely on my own all day like go to a spa or stay in a fancy hotel, go to a fancy restaurant on my own and get oysters and champagne. A day to myself of total selfishness. I would also love to go to a theme park or a water park and go down all the slides 100 times!

I’d like that kind of thing but I feel obliged to spend it with DH and DD…

Don’t feel obliged. it’s your birthday. A day for YOU.
