Is this a request from the 18 year old or something nice you've thought of?

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 16/04/2025 10:18

I'd go simple and classic, so they won't date. I always think the oval ones with a dark (onyx?) inlay look smart.

Something nice I’ve thought of. I think he’ll like them.

any recommendations of where to buy from. I’d like them to be a bit special and something he’ll keep.

Cufflinks seem to be a dead trend......I can't imagine any 18 year old being truly pleased with that as a gift let alone a "big gift" of 100s of pounds.
I know you have had this lovely idea but what about something else that the 18 year old might actually get use out of and wear. Even ask their own opinion rather than buying what you think is nice?

Tinseltuttifruitti · 16/04/2025 10:48

I would go for vintage/estate.

Montblanc have some gorgeous ones

I would doubt an 18yp would want cuflinks. You need particular double cuff shirts to wear them with and are very outdated businesss wear now.

This. Business shirts are moving away from double cuffs possibly becasue they only really work with jackets and we're all wearing jackets less due to hybrid working

With kindness OP, no 18 year old I know (and I know a fair few!) would appreciate cufflinks as a gift.

They will sit in a box in a drawer for the rest of eternity or be donated. Double cuff shirts are rare now, in fact office wear in general is much more casual than it used to be.

pearbottomjeans · 16/04/2025 14:31

Yes sorry op, I’m not sure they will be worth it. You’ll get an ‘ah, thanks!’ and that’s it I bet. Maybe also buy him a double cuff shirt and an occasion to wear one?

ArghhWhatNext · 16/04/2025 14:31

My DS was given some for his 18th a couple of weeks ago (by grandparents). He reckons he will use them on a few random formal occasions - eg weddings, graduation, formal dinners (whatever others may say!). His were from Aspinall of London, very simple and understated.

Thanks for all your recommendations 🙂
