Things in popular culture that had no effect on you

I’ll start

Supersize Me. When it came out so many people told me I’d never want a McDonald’s again. I went out straight away the next morning to get a bacon and egg McMuffin and enjoyed every last bite.

Beaches. I watched it with my Uni flatmate who told me I would cry my eyes out. I kept waiting for the sad bit as she snot cried the whole way through 🫢

OP posts:

There aren't any. I love pop culture, it's the air I breathe. Even stuff I don't like, it still affects me just by existing in the world and being enjoyed by others

GellerYeller · 15/04/2025 22:40

One word: Strictly.

powershowerforanhour · 15/04/2025 22:52

The Blair Witch Project.
I don't like horror films but went to see it because it was all the go and I used to like the cinema and

go often. I sat patiently waiting for the scary bit...and waiting....and waiting...and eventually the film was over and that was that.
It wasn't even a tense psychological thriller or anything. Just some people arguing in some fairly boring looking woodland.
(Loved Dog Soldiers though!)

CarCrashLifes · 15/04/2025 22:53

Spa days / breaks
ughhh

RayonSunrise · 15/04/2025 22:55

Relevant to the OP, but for me it’s Maccy’s full stop.

Yeah it's just a chippy with shit chips that aren't anywhere near as good as oven chips let alone proper chippy chips. That doesn't do fish suppers. The burgers are like what you'd get from a burger van at an outdoor event - not the artisanal handcrafted organic expensive quite nice wanky burgers at wanky festivals now, but like some sad 1980s affair you'd have queue for in the rain waiting to get into the Father Tedesque "tunnel of goats" type attractions. What is the point?

Cattenberg · 16/04/2025 00:38

Most internet memes. Together, they seem to make up a new language that I’m not interested in learning.

Love Island
TOWIE
Made in Essex/Chelsea
The Kardashians
Game of Thrones
The Hunger Games

caringcarer · 16/04/2025 02:00

Taking the knee. I always thought it bazaar for anyone to kneel to anyone else.

Yachtinggwoman · 16/04/2025 02:04

Gundogday · 15/04/2025 18:55

Binge watching tv series.

I love a binge watch. I’m of an age where, if I have to wait a week for the next episode, I can’t remember what’s happened previously.

Yep, I could have written that.

dogsandcatsandhorses · 16/04/2025 03:18

Think there’s more passed me by than I’ve ever actually engaged with.
I’ve never watched a reality or talent ( X factor type) programme.
Never seen Strictly
Never watched a cookery programme tho did watch a couple of Bake Off things.
Never used Facebook or Instagram.
I’ve only ever ordered in one meal (pizza ) in my life ( on holiday)
I don’t live under a stone, honestly 😁

Game of Thrones. Didn't fancy it when it first started due to the violence in it, I'm a bit squeamish with blood and gore. Briefly considered starting it a few series in when everyone was raving about it but then it ended and everyone whinged about how shit the ending was so I doubt I'll ever bother with it now.

I was going to post to say Game of Thrones. I've not seen a single episode.
My brother asked me when it started if I was watching it. I said no, what's it about?
Basically, it's all tits and beheadings.

Righty ho 🤣

We were just begging for them to die in Blair Witch. Please let it end for us all tonight! Okay tonight then. Ofgs. Is anything going to happen.

To be fair being early 20's and not thinking that I liked being scared, I was desperate to be scared after that nonsense, so started with the classics - The Omen, The Exorcist, The Shining. I never looked back.

I still don't understand the hype surrounding Blair Witch. Maybe it was just fantastically marketed.

TheBuffetInspector · 16/04/2025 03:32

High heels or shoes in general. Unless forced by school or work, where I used to wear what were described as comfy men's shoes. I've got splayed hobbit feet now.

TheBuffetInspector · 16/04/2025 03:34

Take That.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 16/04/2025 03:36

Most trends and fads pass me by to be honest. I don't have social media and other than MN the whole online world passes me by. It's mostly mindless junk. Laurel/ Yanni, wtf?? Bottle flipping, dabbing, memes, flossing, baking sourdough bread etc. I hear things through my kids but don't ever feel the need to engage. I have never for one second regretted not knowing such mindless junk, if anything I think less of those who do.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 16/04/2025 04:14

Fleabag too.
All reality tv. It's so boring and set-up.
Fishtail plaits.
Saturday night TV on terrestrial. Huge pass!
Fidget spinners.
Gladiator sandals. Unless your ankles were skinny and your feet svelte, they looked bloody awful.

SinnerBoy · 16/04/2025 04:27

I agree with lots of your submissions.

"Reality" programmes, talent competitions, Friends. Anything "essential," must have, or "artisanal."

powershowerforanhour · Yesterday 22:52

(Loved Dog Soldiers though!)

Being a Northeastener, it has one of my favourite lines ever:

As the werewolf has him up the wall by his throat - "I 'ope I give you the fucking shits!"

mathanxiety · 16/04/2025 04:30

80s hair, thank goodness.

Most trends of the 90s too.

80s hair, thank goodness.

Most trends of the 90s too.

I had short hair but permed on top. I was 13!
I blame my mother. Actually I think in that year's school photo I had my fixed braces in too.

I was quite the catch.

Pandimoanymum · 16/04/2025 05:56

Mamma Mia films/musical. Don’t understand why everyone loves them.
Bottomless Prosecco Brunch. They’re everywhere but I have no interest.
Manifesting. Load of bollocks.

stayathomer · 16/04/2025 06:02

Pretty much every book in the charts that everyone is reading’- I never enjoy them as much as the ones I find randomly. I used to work in a book shop and used to hate hearing people say they weren’t generally a fan of the genre and weren’t sure about reading it but it’s so popular. I was thinking’we have a whole shop full of books, why are you reading one you’re already pretty sure you won’t like!’

cherrymaoam · 16/04/2025 08:23

I’ve never got into the usual sorts of Saturday night “event” television. Strictly Come Dancing, I’m A Celebrity, Traitors, Gladiators, X Factor etc etc.

I think I just don’t really enjoy watching people doing things. I don’t really watch sport either.

Documentaries, dramas, films: yes. People doing things: no.

YorkieTheRabbit · 16/04/2025 09:02

Most tv shows tbh.
Fast food.
Gin.
Selfies
Taking pictures of food I’m about to eat

SchrodingersTwat2 · 16/04/2025 09:16

All reality shows.

Call the Midwife.

Downton Abbey.

Alcohol.

Any clothing or hair fashion.
