22 Mbps internet speed

Hi all.

We've looked at a house we're interested in buying and the current owners did a speed test for us that came back as 22 Mbps. Is this sufficient to work from home with OK Teams calls etc do you think?

Thanks for your advice xxx

Very slow! But it doesn't mean there isn't faster connections available, they're probably on a cheap package. Put the postcode into an online checker.

GasPanic · 15/04/2025 15:40

It should be OK I think for 2 people on Teams, but it is not amazingly fast. And probably wouldn't be that great if a teenager on holiday ramped up a 4K video stream while you were trying to do your work.

Did you check to see whether there is faster available ?

MrsBantry · 15/04/2025 16:02

Thanks @CozyCoupe and @GasPanic - the estate agent seems to think faster could be available but I'm wary as the quoted speed is only an average for what 50% of the people get (and you may be one of the unlucky ones).

Look up whether Fibre to the Premises is available at that postcode.

MrsBantry · 15/04/2025 16:11

Thanks @Snorlaxo - apparently only 'fibre to cabinet'. Apparently full fibre is planned Dec 2026.Do you think just having 'fibre to cabinet' as below will be too slow?

Any one computer will be able to steam or do calls with no issue at all on 22mps. You only need about 4mps for high quality calls etc.

If you had a large family with a someone on a call, a kid online playing games, a TV steaming netflix and everyone on phones scrolling then you'd all be having connection and buffering problems as it won't stretch far between that many devices. But it'll cover 2-3 comfortably.

Thanks @DoAWheelie - that's reassuring
