Parents - pre-boomers, left home at 30 and 25 to get married.
DH - late boomer, 24.
Me, gen X, 19, for work, and moved overseas at 22.
DD1, late millennial, 23, and moved overseas.
DD2, gen Z, 23.

DD2 lived with us for just short of a year after graduating, as she had a job wfh. She then moved out for a job and they made her redundant after a few months, but she stayed where she was and got another job.

DD1 moved overseas straight after graduation and is unlikely to return to U.K.

Gen x, 16

Natsku · 15/04/2025 07:13

A couple weeks shy of 19, when I went to university.

In contrast my 40 year old brother just moved out of our parents house. Into my house.

Natsku · 15/04/2025 07:14

I also moved abroad permanently at 20 (though I didn't intend it to be permanent - my parents weren't too happy!)

mintydoggyv · 15/04/2025 07:15

1940 s left home at 20

OlderYearsIsBest · 15/04/2025 07:19

I was 18, left to go to university, never went back home. Wouldn't have wanted to, I'm amazed at how many youngsters are still at home in their 20s and beyond.
My own children the same....I expected them to move out at 18 or go to university. One moved straight away, one went to university but seldom came back as they spent time with their partner in the holidays. I was happy to see them leave, children need to be allowed to grow into adults and become responsible for themselves.

ChillyBearLove · 15/04/2025 07:24

Sibling and I both Gen X - left at 18

mum and dad -boomers - left at 29 and 21

Dc will probably go to uni at 19 but expect them to be back!

Why are you amazed? House prices, rental costs aren't cheap and for many early 20s they can save a deposit for their own home whilst living with parents

I'm gen X. Went to uni at 18. Was only with my parents for Easter and Xmas holidays. Moved abroad when I graduated and worked there for 3 years. Went traveling for the best part of a year and then moved back in with my parents for nearly a year while temping and looking for a proper job. Got a job and moved age 26.

Marshtit · 15/04/2025 07:26

notacooldad · 15/04/2025 07:31

Gen x and i moved out at 18.
Ds1 is a millennial and moved out at 17, came back at 21, left again a few months later to buy his own place
Ds2 , generation z moved out at 22 to buy his own place as well.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 15/04/2025 07:33

22 - I got a fairly low paid job, but could afford to rent with a friend. I was back home for around 6 months after uni. Six months was enough!

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 15/04/2025 07:36

Millennial- started work at 16 in a minimum wage job, met boyfriend on 18k job, bought our first home (flat) at 18 so moved out then, never been back and would never go back, shit childhood. Have one gen z and one alpha child, imagine both will live at home until late 20s.

Our children would never be able to buy a home on standard jobs like we did. The world has got worse, not better.

Duidi123 · 15/04/2025 07:37

Millenial - went to Uni at 18, came home for holidays/Christmas but moved out fully at 21.

Mrsmouse71 · 15/04/2025 07:38

Gen X 15

Marshtit · 15/04/2025 07:39

one gen z worked abroad for some years
i wonder if that is more common today?

perhaps not as my own parents and other relatives also worked abroad and they were the Silent Generation

Lozza70 · 15/04/2025 07:41

Me Gen X- 18 and moved to work in London. Lived in landlady accommodation initially before moving to the joy of house shares!

fungibletoken · 15/04/2025 07:41

Millennial - properly moved out at 23 I think, a year after finishing uni and starting work. My first job was in London and I had some exams to do too, so for that year I lived with my parents who weren't a bad commute from the city. It was actually a really lovely time, very different from younger years! Also helpful (for everyone!) to know that it had an end date as the plan was always to move in with now DH at the end of the year.

Rainydaysandwellybobs · 15/04/2025 07:41

Older millennial (I think).
Left home at 20 to move in with now DH.
Would have moved out with my sister into a rental flat (we were actively looking) if I hadn't met him! My sister also moved in with her boyfriend around the same time.

fourelementary · 15/04/2025 07:41

I’m gen X and moved out age 19
both my older kids are gen z and moved out 18

hubby is a boomer and was 26 before he moved out!!

homemadebasilpesto · 15/04/2025 07:43

Gen X, 17, got married and start university that year.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 15/04/2025 07:44

Moved out at 19. Never returned home to live. 49 now.
ds1 who is now 27 moves out at 22
ds2 who is now 23 moved out at 22
dd is 19 and no signs of moving out, she’s looking for a job currently after seasonal work finished last month.

DeathMetalMum · 15/04/2025 07:44

18 I'm a millennial left for uni and never went back, except for Christmas holidays for the first two years.

My eldest brother (16 years older) left at 16.

curious79 · 15/04/2025 07:44

Gen X - post uni at 21 (though living away for uni)

BejewelledCat · 15/04/2025 07:47
