Mat pay help anyone??

Hi.
Desperately looking for someone to help workout mat allowance as a ftm to be.

My job offer the standard straight away 90% (of your monthly wage) for 6w plus smp then

12w half pay over 12w or
12w half pay over 33w.

I'm leaning towards the 12w half pay over 33w but can't work out approx what I'd be taking home and payroll share they can't help.

I earn approx 2780 pm

Anyone with a better maths brain than me able to help??

Can your company payroll not confirm for you? Ours sends out confirmation of expected pay per week once they have the MAT1B form

ETA...sorry just seen that Payroll have said they can't help 🤦🏻‍♀️. That's rather unhelpful of them as surely that's their job

2,780 a month is approx £641 a week. Half of that let’s call it £320 a week.

320x12/33 =116.36 per week or £504 a month.

BUT due to how tax and NI works it would be more than this because you wouldn’t be paying anything on it. So approx £600 a month for the 33 weeks, I make it.

You haven’t added SMP to this.

Don’t forget you’ll also accumulate annual leave during the period you’re on Mat leave. At my place most people tag this on at the end when Mat leave finishes and then they get the extra weeks at full pay before returning. Alternatively you can take some before Mat leave starts, and some after (or even leave some for when you first return/carry some over, depends when your leave year starts and ends). You just can’t take ‘holiday’ when you’re receiving Mat leave pay so it needs to be immediately before or after.

Payroll should be able to help, and work the figures out for you. If they can’t, try your general HR department and also have a look at the ACAS website www.acas.co.uk

Lastly, if someone at the same pay grade has had Mat leave recently, have a chat to them about it all - KIT days, phased return, flex application for afterwards (if you want to consider part time).

Our payroll are terrible, so unhelpful. How they get away with it I've no idea.

Ah thank you. You make it look so simple lol.
Then I add the smp to it?
187 pw is it now.

need your gross pay as otherwise you’re mixing a gross and a net number and it will be out.

Your pay is based on your average pay between weeks 17-25 of pregnancy. Do you have a set monthly wage or do you get any bonus/overtime/commission?

Usually SMP is not paid on top of the 6 weeks 90%. Anything over and above the SMP amount I found my work would basically “top up” SMP to be the equivalent salary.

Payroll or HR should absolutely work this out for you - it’s literally their job! I would ask them again for a monthly forecast of both options. Anywhere I have worked has done this automatically.

You need to use your gross pay figure. I doubt the smp is on top. Most places top up SMP to whatever percentage they choose to offer.

To work it out though - take your monthly gross pay and * 12. Divide it by 104 (50. % pay and 52 weeks a year). That's your new weekly pay before tax.

Use an online pay calculator to work out what your net pay would be.

It's set. So set at the same after tax per month of 2780.
Our payroll are very unhelpful, I will enquire with HR.

Perhaps I'm wrong though and it's not SMP .. I work for local authority

Correct. In my company, it isn’t added on top, and it wasn’t mentioned in the OP. My company merely ‘tops up’ the SMP to half pay. Obviously some companies are more generous and OP would have to check the policy of her company.

My payroll and HR also told me that they were unable to provide a forecast of my monthly maternity payments! And they’ve got my pay wrong for the past two months.

I would double check your full policy wording to confirm whether you get half pay plus or including SMP - sometimes it’s noted in a separate clause.

I've managed to speak to a colleague today who shared she had approx 1100 per month and she was on the bottom scale where as im on the top. For the 33w option.

So @ItTook9Years it looks like you're right it'll be around what you quoted plus smp.
