What does ectopic pain feel like?

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 13:21

Found out I’m pregnant last week, think I’m around 5 weeks.

Had some symptoms like nausea, headaches and tired. The past 3 days have had pain only on my right side lower down in my stomach/pubic area and on my right lower back around the kidney area. It’s not mega painful, but uncomfortable and isn’t always there.

My GP surgery is closed right now so posting here. Google/NHS just says one sided pain, shoulder tip pain and bleeding but I only have one sided pain so no idea?

Get checked. I didn’t have any of the classic symptoms, I’d had a bit of spotting and felt faint. If I’d left it longer there’s a good chance I wouldn’t be here. Go and get scanned - they’d far rather that than having to admit you and perform surgery further down the line! And if it isn’t that then you’ll have saved yourself a lot of worry.

I had an ectopic. It was found at 8-9 weeks. I didn’t really have pain. I had diarrhoea and some bleeding. The bleeding was different to usual blood. That’s how I knew something wasn’t right.
Google to see if there is an early pregnancy unit nearby. They may help.

Usually shoulder tip pain is after a rupture as it’s a sign of internal bleeding. That is an emergency situation.

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 13:38

Do I call the GP? Or just call up a hospital? I have the pain now and it’s quite sore but it comes and goes. Sometimes my upper thighs hurt too

Call your local EPU and say you’re worried about an ectopic.

SnaccidentsHappen · 14/04/2025 13:56

My upper thigh hurt too, also had shoulder pain along with what I had assumed where horrendous period cramps.

GivingUpFinally · 14/04/2025 14:04

Ypu probably have to go through your gp first. I know I did. They had to refer me in. After 2 mcs and an ectopic, I was able to self refer in my trust.

With all 3 of the ectopics I had, I didn't ever have the typical text book symptoms. Pain was dull and constant or sharp (but not too uncomfortable) and intermittent. Or a combination of the above.

Had maple syrupy bleeds with all 3 three which was what alerted me.

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 14:10

Called EPU and they’ve advised just to go straight to A&E?
My husband is at work and I’m at home with 2 kids, no idea how to manage that

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 14/04/2025 14:15

Take the children with you, get your husband to meet you up at A&E, it will save time.
Hope it is okay @luckychillies and you are reassured that all is well.

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 14:25

My oldest doesn’t know I’m pregnant and is definitely old enough to know exactly what is happening 😭

OP posts:
InsolentAnnie · 14/04/2025 14:32

Can a friend take the kids? If not, do what @Justkeepingplatesspinningsays. Tell DC you have a pain that needs to be checked out - hopefully your husband will be there before you have to explain much. It’s really not worth waiting.

GrandTheftWalrus · 14/04/2025 14:36

I wouldn't wait. I had a ruptured ectopic last year and it was horrific. It ruptured at work and first aid were going to send me home as they didn't know what was wrong.

Id had shoulder tip pain and the day I got a positive test I started bleeding and didn't stop for 2 weeks then it ruptured. I had emergency surgery and lost a tube.

Xwx1010 · 14/04/2025 14:39

Don’t wait incase it is an ectopic, you don’t want to risk rupture. I imagine you’ll be seen as a priority in A&E. Your husband needs to come home so you can go.

Both of mine felt like severe trapped wind, down one side, shooting pains up my back and bum. Lower back pain, cramps and spotting too.
shoulder pain usually only kicks in if there’s fluid build up which aggravates a certain nerve = shoulder pain. Fluid usually a result of tube rupture.

tedcherries · 14/04/2025 14:57

I didn’t have the pain until my tube ruptured. I then had emergency surgery.

but leading up to that, before I had a scan and diagnosed with PUL, I had very weird purple ish coloured spotting x

tedcherries · 14/04/2025 14:57

I also had the shoulder pain but that was right towards the end, the day I had my surgery.

ElsaMars · 14/04/2025 15:01

I had a weird dragging pain around my vagina, was constant but not agonising and I could hardly walk. I knew something was wrong. My tube ruptured before I was operated on, I didn't feel a thing.

WickWood · 14/04/2025 15:14

Definitely go to A&E, i hope all is well x

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 16:32

Just an update, at A&E. Got here about 3.45pm and had both kids, husband has arrived and took them both. I’ve been triaged and now in a gown in a room waiting for the doctor

OP posts:
historyrepeatz · 14/04/2025 17:31

Good luck OP. Like pp’s I didn’t feel pain for a while after rupture. Felt like I had trapped gas and it was increasing. I got very cold. I was told my hands were like ice. I expelled everything from both ends at the same time, yuk. Think this was from the internal bleeding. I’m glad you have gone in. It’s easy to dismiss but doing that could cost your life.

bigdinkydoodah · 14/04/2025 18:34

Please get checked. I ruptured at 12 weeks and it was very painful, I had shoulder pain and felt sick and led. I lost a tube, it was the worst thing I’ve ever been through.

ghostbusters · 14/04/2025 18:43

Hope you're holding up ok @luckychillies and have been seen by the doctor.

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 18:44

@ghostbustersthank you! Still waiting to be seen, so hungry and bored lol

luckychillies · 14/04/2025 20:48

back home, 4 hours at a&e and lots of tests to be told to come back in 2 days for a scan and more bloods 🙃

OP posts:
InsolentAnnie · 15/04/2025 00:09

Glad you’ve been seen. If anything gets worse in the meantime, don’t be afraid of going back.

tedcherries · 16/04/2025 07:53

Hope all is well x

Thestarsinthesky · 16/04/2025 08:12

I’ve had 3 and all ruptured. 2 tube and 1 corneal ectopic. All had a heavy ache like a stitch on one side. Gradually became more poorly overall, diareah. Other than the stitch ache though nothing I would have realised. All 3 of mine were surgery jobs and the blood had gone to my lungs but only once do I remember the shoulder tip pain
