Roseanne Barr

WTF happened to this woman? IIJM who thinks that the early series of Roseanne was ground-breaking and brillliant television? With a great cast and script. Obviously, I thought, a very smart and switched-on woman. And now... it seems so sad.

OP posts:
Dustyblue · 14/04/2025 01:11

I agree. I absolutely loved the original series and the remake looked promising until she blew it up.

I think it's a combo of mental health & drug issues that have done her in. Such a shame

Beeinalily · 14/04/2025 01:15

I tried to rewatch the series recently and hated it. The "poor working class family" - in their own detached house where the kids had their own bathrooms, the older daughter got everything she wanted even if the husband has to go without his (necessary) new shoes, the gross humour... But the thing that eventually made me drop it was the snobbery. Roseanne walks into a job sweeping in a hairdressing salon where the job is "beneath her", gets promoted on her first day... Just not the real world, where most of us will take a job shovelling shit if we need to. Sorry OP, I remembered it as being good too, but it really doesn't stand the test of time.

ChessorBuckaroo · 14/04/2025 01:31

She was great. Unfortunately her mental health has taken a nose dive. Sad to see.

The TV programme was funny back in the day, but I always got the impression she was an arsehole in real life.

Tbrh · 14/04/2025 04:35

I thought the show had a come back, but then she said or did something controversial and it was cancelled?

Dustyblue · 14/04/2025 06:44

@Beeinalily I saw most of it when it 1st screened in the 80's, then re-watched in 2016. We have very different impressions! They were absolutely 'working class,' such as the term goes. Remember that this is an English term meaning different things elsewhere. Yes the house was 'detached' but so are many/most in America or Australia (where I live).

I think you may have mistaken snobbery for satire? Much of the show was her taking the piss out of wealthy people, although she became one herself. In the last seasons, the character of Roseanne wins the lottery and the show went well off the rails. John Goodman, who is a brilliant actor despite his own struggles with alcohol, did distance himself from the later 2 series.

Sorry for babbling, I know a stupid amount about this

AllTheTreesOfTheField · 14/04/2025 07:20

What is the controversy about? Roseanne Barr herself or something in a new series? Loved the show back in the day, but not up to speed on any new developments.

DeskJotter · 14/04/2025 07:23

I'm sure she'll say something rabidly anti-trans soon, and Mumsnetters will do a u-turn and proclaim her their new Queen.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 14/04/2025 07:27

Roseanne was a talented writer at one time but I don’t think she was ever known for being a nice person, and the essence of ourselves tends to get more distilled the older we get, so it’s not super surprising she’s even more of a dick now.

She had a rep for being an arsehole even back in the day, and didn’t Sara Gilbert come out with a load of stuff recently about what a toxic bully she was on set?

It was a funny show at the time but it obviously hasn’t aged well and the later series were rubbish.

Dustyblue · 14/04/2025 08:27

I liked the episode where Joan Collins played Roseanne's posh bitch cousin. So much satire but subtle. In the the out-takes just before the credits it's Joan making tea for the crew

It had its moments😂

The show producer Chuck Lorre is even more well known for being an arsehole. He is of the Harvey Weinstein era and there are many accounts to say he ripped Roseanne Barr off in the financial sense. Allegedly.

I have never managed to find what JKR said that is anti trans, I know Trump doesn't want men in womens sport but that's along with me and most women I would think.

Well, I couldn't find my glasses and they were on my nose! So I know these things happen 😁

Please! Trump does not give a fuck about women's sport. He doesn't give a fuck about anything other than himself. He says whatever works with his weird supporters. Every now and again that chimes with what sane people think as in this case.

The short version is she called a black woman a gorilla. The woman was a member of the Obama administration and I think in doing so Roseanne outed herself as a trump supporter as well (might have gotten that bit wrong)

It was just after the new series launched so she was written out. Then she went on a rant about how she had made Sara Gilbert and Sara had betrayed her, threw her under the bus etc rather than owning the fact she was a racist POS or even just admitting and taking responsibility for the fact she had said something awful.

AllTheTreesOfTheField · 14/04/2025 09:07

@icebearforpresident Thank you for the update. Shocked and very sad to read that.

That’s just America though, I think.

Land was cheap and cheap, wooden framed houses were cheap, so lots of working class people lived in detached houses.

Admittedly it was a far cry from the overcrowding and squalor people in the UK often lived in, but they were still working class and often living very hand to mouth.

I loved the show back in the 90s, I thought it was funny and refreshing / original, however I think even then I was aware that Roseanne, both the character and the actress, was not likeable.

She comes across as brash and overbearing and I’m not surprised to hear that she’s now making racist comments.

I used to watch this, i loved her sister in it

I am under no illusion that Trump cares anything about women

HunnyPot · 14/04/2025 09:45

She was never as talented as she was made out to be.

The original run of the show took a nose dive when she made a name for herself and threatened the network to leave if she didn’t get her own way.

She gave her talentless husband a job and made ridiculous creative decisions!

I even remember the last season where she tried to turn the show into the US version of Ab Fab!

Oh you mean pro-womens rights? Yes I forgot, some anti-women misogynists and femphobes think if you're pro women that means you're automatically anti-male - er, sorry, trans'.

Heaven forbid women from a forum for women about women and our issues.....admire feminists. You might want to get your crucifix out with the fellow men. 🙄

I did actually laugh that ‘anti trans’ made it onto a thread about fucking Roseanne! It’s like a certain section of hard of thinking people who think women’s rights and wanting to retain single sex spaces and sports for biological females only equate to hating all trans people.

Do they have a set daily quota of how many times they can say something is ‘anti trans’?! Bonus points for mentioning JKR, Trump, and Putin is now making an appearance. They should have a day off.

Has Roseanne ever been pro feminist? I know she courted the lesbian audience during the run of her show but she said some disgusting things about Sandra Bernhard recently.

I thought she was going after the pro trump, anit abortion, Fox News crowd these days.
