Bit freaked out after being followed by a random in car. What was that all about??

I’ve just got home after a bit of a scary experience and am a bit freaked out so would value your opinions.

I live rurally and I live alone for sad reasons I won’t go into. Well I say alone, I have a lovely and massive ddog so it just me and him.

I just drove out to the nearest open shop which is about 15 mins way. I take the windy and isolated country lanes route because it’s beautiful round here and if I’m lucky I might see an owl, pheasant or deer.

As I was coming back through the lanes just now, fully in the dark and barely any other cars usually, there was a car following behind me. I went on for a while then pulled over into a passing spot to let them through so I could go on at lowish speed (30mph) without lights up my backside and keep an eye out for wildlife. The other car passed me.

I carried on then 100m later on the same car was pulled over into the next passing spot in the lane so I drove past and carried on. Other car then pulled out and followed behind me.

This is starting to freak me out as I’m in the middle of nowhere without ddog and they seem to be playing silly buggers. So I put my foot down along a straight stretch, and so do they, so I think they’re definitely following me.

I decide I’m not having it and not being intimidated by an arsehole behind me, so I pull over at the next passing spot for them to go past. And they stop in the road and wait about 50m behind me. I wait 5 mins and so do they

I’m a bit scared now. Why the hell are they following and then loitering behind in this isolated spot?? I pull out abruptly and do a straight stretch, they bloody well follow, so I do to a do a v sharp u turn/ reverse at the next turning so I am then back turning right towards them at the little junction iyswim (no I cannot do a diagram I’m afraid, don’t know how that all works!!)

Anyway, when I did my almost handbrake turn and was going to turn back towards them they drove up to me at the junction to block my right hand turn. I wound my window down a bit and said what the f is your problem? I am thoroughly freaked out at this point. It’s a bearded guy alone in the car who says through his wound down window “wait there, I want word with you”.

I am not bloody well waiting there. I immediately pull forward and round him, scraping the he’ll out of my car in the hedge I drove into to do o, and then I sped off down the lane fr too fast me terrified of see his headlights behind me.

WHAT THE HELL??!! Did I over-react? I was really scared. Surely if it was police or something and they’d had a legitimate reason they’d have said so?? (It was a dark escort type car, one driver with mobile on a mount).

What do you think that was all about? Usually I feel confident and secure, but I like I said I live alone and this happened not far from my house so I’m a bit perturbed. Am I just being paranoid or is a bit scary?

Don’t know what that was all about but Jesus that must have been terrifying! I think you dealt with it very well under the circumstances Confused
Hope you’re ok now.

Seasonofthesticks · 10/04/2025 23:05

That sounds terrifying! I think I’d report.

pimplebum · 10/04/2025 23:06

I assume he didn’t follow you further and your safe at home now ?

id give that shop a swerve for as long as you are able

bloody weird , I’d report that to the police and ask the shop if they have any cctv of him

normal blokes with good intentions don’t behave like that , do you have good car locks and phone charger in car ?

Userxyd · 10/04/2025 23:09

Really scary! Have you told someone who knows you what car make model colour etc description of him just in case?? Want to tell us? You could ask in the shop to see if they know him?

Copperoliverbear · 10/04/2025 23:12

I’d call the police, he could do something terrible to his next victim

Wowzel · 10/04/2025 23:15

Definitely tell the police!

ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself · 10/04/2025 23:17

If he wanted to talk to you he wouldn’t have driven past when you pulled in. Please report it.

Are you at home alone now?

Beesandhoney123 · 10/04/2025 23:22

Report it right now. Get advice from the police on how to handle it should you see him again.

Get dashcam in your car and beef up your home security, cameras etc.

Do you keep a small canister of hairspray in your car door pocket? Could come in handy one day.

Call your neighbour hood watch and get a sticker in the house/ car window.

Hope you are OK. Glad you have a big dog. Is dog an unfriendly sort with a mean stare? I hope so.

BlakeCarrington · 10/04/2025 23:24

Thanks for your answers. Yes I’m home safe now thanks. I drove well out of my way and at a speed I wouldn’t usually to make sure there with no lights behind me when I got home. I was scared.

Lovey ddog is now with me on sofa and will come to bed with me on this occasion (not allowed usually but I know will bark the house down if need be and I need the assurance).

Ring the police and report it now whilst it’s fresh in your mind!!

The absolute weirdo!! I dread to think what could have happened.

CavalierApproach · 10/04/2025 23:29

I don’t think you overreacted. Creepy fucker! Well done for getting out of the situation. I do think reporting is a good idea.

Glad you’ve got ddog for company.

Mudflaps · 10/04/2025 23:32

Please report it now, don't wait until the morning. And consider getting a dash cam, having footage would be handy and even the sight of a dash cam could mean pricks like you met tonight might avoid you whwn they realised they're being recorded. You did well but I don't think I'd have put my self on the position of speaking to him, I'd have driven to a house with lights on a blown the horn until someone appeared. Glad your home safe.

Pandimoanymum · 10/04/2025 23:32

Definitely not an overreaction, that’s very creepy. Glad you’re ok now and have your dog with you x

PregnantAndKnackered1 · 10/04/2025 23:36

Glad you’re home safe, not an overreaction

Stoppickingthosespots · 10/04/2025 23:39

Scary 😟

Keepingthingsinteresting · 10/04/2025 23:44

Hope you’re ok @BlakeCarrington , that sounds terrifying. Please report asap and keep DDog close.

IWillJustSayThis · 10/04/2025 23:48

That sounds super scary to be honest. As another person said, consider purchasing a dash cam.

murasaki · 10/04/2025 23:51

That sounds terrifying, I hope you are ok. Did you clock the plates? Do report either way. I'm glad you have the dog.

CareerChange24 · 10/04/2025 23:56

Was he able to see where you pulled in to your house? I really hope not. I’d report this to the police and that’s not like me to say. This is a man stalking and intimidating a lone female at night. I hope you are ok!

INeedAnotherName · 10/04/2025 23:58

Report it immediately. It's a known ploy to assault lone women who end up freezing in fright. You did remarkedly well and I hope to follow your example if it ever happened to me.

murasaki · 10/04/2025 23:59

Yes, absolute credit to your quick thinking.

MadBlack · 11/04/2025 00:00

I also dont say this lightly, but i too would report this. Hope you're ok

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 11/04/2025 00:03

Christ OP that sounds terrifying, I hope you're ok and I'm so sorry that happened to you.

ANDisayWhatsGoingon · 11/04/2025 00:05

Did you report it?

EmeraldRoulette · 11/04/2025 00:07

I hope you reported it, and I hope you got a chance to get the registration

I'm so sorry this happened to you

I worry that he's out there looking for another single female.
