SNORN car

Hi all,

I’m wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and can advise.

There’s a car that’s been parked right outside my house since late October/early November and hasn’t moved an inch. I initially sent a query to the council about it a while ago but then it was taxed. I just checked it 10 minutes ago its status properly — turns out it’s been declared SORN.

From what I understand, SORN vehicles aren’t allowed to be kept on public roads, yet this one is taking up a much-needed space on an already busy street. I’ve reported it again, but I’m curious — has anyone else dealt with something like this before? Did the council actually do anything? How long did it take? I have emailed council and reported to DVLA.

Any advice or shared experiences would be appreciated!

Yep!

We have a public car park behind our house that you don't know about unless you know its there (if that makes sense). A car appeared over a year ago and hasn't moved since. Tyres are flat, covered in moss, not tax (SORN) and council are not interested at all. Now, another car has appeared that's nor taxed either. Infuriating when spaces are much needed!

@Beepbeepoutoftheway oh gosh. Wouldn’t council remove it? Or DVLA? I reported to both. Its a busy public road. Why do people do this

I've reported it several times but it's still there. There's definitely something dodgy going on with as somebody swapped the reg plates over last year too!

@Beepbeepoutoftheway that’s so annoying :/ hoping someone gets back to me. Its taking up two car parking spaces.

Nobody from DVLA has ever got back to me and council don't deal with untaxed cars in my area 🙄 The car hasn't been MOTd since 2010 either!

It's parked at an odd angle but it's perfect when I reverse in next to it as its easier to get my daughter out 🙈

Just makes a mockery of us mugs who do pay tax and MOT!

They don’t remove them because it’s costly. The council would have to pay for it to be lifted, transported and then stored. Then there’s the admin. If they just leave them alone it costs zero.

They don't remove them but I've seen quite a few cars clamped due to no tax etc so it can be done.

Cars around our way are clamped if not taxed, they don't seem to be removed, clamping is probably quite cheap and easy to do, removal not so much

But they can only clamp if it’s on the public highway.

Contact the police, that’s what we did in similar situation and after a week or two the cars were gone. We made out we were concerned about the owner’s welfare as the car hadn’t moved in a long time. (We didn’t know who it belonged to, but knew the police would be able to find out). Didn’t mention it was SORN or anything. We’ve done this twice with different cars.

@ChompandaGrazia It's a public car park for anybody and everybody to use. I've seen a van clamped on there before so it can be done.

A public car park is private land though.

Hi all, quick update.

Council came this morning and have put a untaxed vehicle sticker. Bright yellow and red. And a warning card. Does anyone know what will happen next? Will council follow this up?

As I said, it can be done as seen previously .
