What’s it like to live in Hereford/herefordshire

We’re seriously considering moving there from the midlands. Ross on wye looks lovely. I’d like a market town/village possibly. Also need to think about schools, are there any decent sen schools? Ds is autistic and has a ehcp

No idea about Sen schools as I attended the local.

It’s a lovely place to live but you will need to drive. As teens we learnt to drive as soon as we could. My village is lovely in summer but in the winter it’s regularly blocked with rain or snow. Monmouth is nicer than Ross!

Ross is not lovely, but Herefordshire is. However I'd like you to delete this thread as we don't want everyone knowing how great it is!

Ledbury is much nicer in my opinion and has great primary schools around and about.

Do you need specialist school or good provision at a mainstream? Secondarys are a bit hit and miss. Weobley is great for SEND provision or Bishops (in Hereford) especially if he has ASD.

The only primary special school in Hereford is in special measures (deservedly so as it's awful) but the SEND secondary school is pretty good.

There are two send colleges and a mainstream college with a good send provision.

Feel free to PM me if you need more info.

Will take a look at Monmouth thanks.
main thing is the schools really

Yes, Blackmarston. It's also at capacity as although it's dreadful, there's nowhere else. Monmouth is lovely and depending on your child's needs there's a great school close called Llangattock.

mugginsoverhere · 09/04/2025 15:48

I lived in Ross on Wye for a short while and it was ok but the town was very quiet so we’d drive to Hereford or Gloucester to go round the shops. It had a Wetherspoon but no other eatery’s to my memory. It is very pretty but it’s a long way from the beach so we moved back. Depends what you’re looking for I suppose. Ross felt more of a pensioners coach trip out than a home, just my two cents.

movingawaypossibly · 09/04/2025 15:57

Thank you all very helpful. Is Monmouth wales or Herefordshire?

What’s Leominster like?

OP posts:
ILoveAnOwl · 09/04/2025 16:02

Leominster is ok. Nice community feel. Westfield school (sen) is good and goes all the way through from 3-18 I think.

Oh this sounds ideal. Will have a google

Growing up as a teen near Weobley and Leominster, it was boring as fuck. Nothing to do unless you like long walks or cows. I spent most of my teenage years up a tree with a book.

movingawaypossibly · 09/04/2025 16:51

any shopping centres near Leominster ? There is some lovely houses there

movingawaypossibly · 09/04/2025 16:51

I do like Ledbury aswell

Leominsters got little shops, a wonderful deli and supermarkets. It's about thirty minutes from Hereford which is ok for shops etc.

CheeseAndHamToastieAndCrisps · 09/04/2025 21:03

Monmouth is just over the border in Wales. It’s not far from Ross. It has better shops.

Why have you dragged up this thread just to post this? Fuck off back to civilisation then. Hmm

I wouldn't recommend moving to Wales if you have a child with SEN. The Welsh ALN system is a total shitshow for a lot of kids.

I am intrigued to know why my reply has been taken down so the MNHQ team can "take a look at it" - it was just info about all the delights of Herefordshire!

I will await the outcome with bated breath!

It was hardly a considered reply (to a question raised some 12-months ago), just ranting moan which begged the question, if it is so bad, why have you stayed for 25yrs?

Don't live in ROW myself but know it very well, visit regularly and have friends who live there.
Delightful little town in a nice location.
If you want all the trappings of a large town/city then it is not the place for you but it has everything you would expect of a small market town with the added bonus of good road links and lovely scenery.
Traffic into Hereford can be a bit of a pain if you go at the "wrong" time and the hospital can be busy.
Worse thing about ROW is the traffic drone from the A40.
