We will be driving from Scotland to Hampshire in mid July and would like somewhere to stay to break the journey. Can anyone recommend a lovely hotel or pub with rooms with a great restaurant?

The Westmorland at Tebay services. Honestly lovely for one night and great food. It does get booked up in the holidays though.

North Lakes Hotel? No idea if it's any good though.

I came to say Tebay as well. Fabulous place, worth the money.

Tebay!! If only all motorway services were like this…..

The Inn at Whitewell

Another Tebay recommendation. Our favourite when travelling down south from Fife.

I’d go for The George at Penrith and take the 2 minute stroll down to The Elbow pub for food.

Another vote for Westmorland hotel. We have been many times and it’s great

Time40 · 08/04/2025 20:51

Yes, definitely Tebay!

Also, few years since I was there, this resort near Carnforth. So handy for motorway and really chill. The food was decent pub grub back then anyway. They do rooms and cabins. There's a pool too.

This. The George is lovely, not too pricey and full of character (also you shouldn't be able to hear the M6.) Penrith is a beautiful town and you'll be right in the middle of it. Why on earth would you want to spend the night in a service station (no matter how nice?!)

If you want something more fancy, the George and Dragon at Clifton just outside Penrith is beautiful and does amazing food https://georgeanddragonclifton.co.uk/

Westmorland really isn't in the service station. It's surrounded by fields, even though it is only a few hundred meters from the services. Honestly, it is one of my happy places. Alongside John Lewis, a royal park, and a particular hotel In Morocco.😂

North Lakes Hotel is just off Junction 40 so not the most scenic spot on Cumbria but very convenient and it's a decent hotel with a good restaurant. I've had a couple of good meals there.
If you want a view, Another Place is right on the shore of Ullswater and only a short drive from the motorway. I've never been, but have heard positive comments from a few friends who have.

It’s lovely! Fabulous spa too

We often break up our journey at the Royal Station Hotel in Carnforth. Much cheaper than the lakes. Comfy beds. Delightful staff. Nice old building with nice walks.
Nice museum at the Brief Encounters Bar and Cafe. We have stayed over a few nights whilst visiting The Lakes before heading across the border.
