If you could live anywhere along the M5 motorway, where would you go?

Anywhere from Birmingham to Devon but easy enough to access the M5, where would you land and why?

City, town or village? Urban, suburban or countryside?

Isabella40 · 08/04/2025 19:11

Worcester, Cheltenham just like these areas

Well, that’s up to you

Oh I thought you were asking for recommendations 😆

Personally I'd be aiming for somerset/devon kind of area. Easy access to countryside and beaches

Exactly where I do live! Somerset, with the Quantock Hills as a backdrop to my garden, Exmoor less than half an hour away, beautiful coast and beaches only a short drive away, quiet, very rural, a mile up a single track road, no neighbours except sheep and cattle and pure darkness at night. Absolute bliss. M5 junction 20 minutes drive away.

Papyrophile · 08/04/2025 19:44

Herefordshire or Worcestershire... near enough to civilisation but pleasant countryside. Or Somerset and Exmoor, but I don't like the Bristol Channel beaches as much as the Atlantic side.

Grew up at the end of the M5 just outside Exeter, would recommend that area, but it is expensive these days. Added bonus, really good rail connections.

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/04/2025 20:04

Bristol. It's where I was born and grew up.

Anywhere south of Bristol and north of Exeter.

Taunton and Bridgwater are popular towns both served with two M5 motorway junctions. Lots to do - seasonal festivals in both towns, both have good shopping and leisure facilities. Bridgwater has Hinckley point so there are ‘more than normal’ HMOs. Housing more expensive than Taunton.

Wellington is nice too. Lots to do in these areas and the sandy resort of Minehead is nearby.

North Devon (Barnstaple/ Ilfracombe/ Bideford etc) is an hour away from Taunton. Exeter is 35 mins away.

If you’re looking to live near the beach, then Weston Super Mare or Burnham on Sea/Highbridge is the place to go but very run down.

Tiverton is a dead town, nothing there.

If it was me. I’d be picking Taunton. It’s a central location and property is reasonably priced.

I have lived in several places close to the M5, on the Devon/Somerset border. Lovely area.

I live in Gloucestershire between Tewkesbury and Gloucester, not far from the river Severn. Lived here all my life and feel blessed every day when I walk the dogs and get to stare at May Hill in one direction, the Malverns in another and towards Cheltenham in the other. 25/30 minutes from the M5.

annlee3817 · 08/04/2025 20:27

Does the Malvern hills count? 17 mins away

notatinydancer · 08/04/2025 20:33

Wells or Exeter

Depends how high your beachy standards are. I wouldn't even let my dog swim in the sea at Weston!

Wells is 45 mins from Junction 23 so not right near to the motorway. Really nice place though I agree.

madamegazelle1 · 08/04/2025 22:06

Portishead or Clevedon!

Me too we must be almost neighbours! The amount of housing development along this stretch is shocking though. The ugliest houses you've ever seen being built on flood plain.

I love the area but the gridlock on the roads (especially if there's an accident on the M5) is not so good. So bear that in mind OP, when there's a problem with the M5 it causes huge problems in the surrounding areas. Not great for trying to get home.

Teenagerantruns · 09/04/2025 00:05

I live by the sea in somerset, it's 40 mins to tauntan or Bridgewater though for m5.
