How much water do you use a day?

We just got our water bill, and it's gone up by 40% with Thames Water, who apparently have been allowed to hike bills this year.

Once I'd got over the initial shock I looked at our water usage - which hadn't really gone up - and I was wondering whether we use too much water. Apparently we use 471 litres a day, or 79m3 for the last 6 months (waste and fresh). That's for two adults in the house all day (full time WFH). One shower each per day.

Would love to know whether that's excessive!

Also, I've checked and there are no leaks - during the times we are away/asleep, no water is being used.

I'm with a different Water company, but our bills show whether you are below, at, or above the average usage for the number of people living in the home in your area. Does yours not have anything like this?

I can't look just at the minute, but I'll have a look later to see what my usage is. I live alone, but it wouldn't be double if someone else lived here.

My (Adult) goddaughter lives with me sometimes, and to be honest, I've never really noticed my usage be dramatically different, I've never actually given it a second thought.

I do think that's quite a lot for 2 adults, but you do work from home which makes a difference. We used 61m3 for 3 adults. I am trying to get our bill down.

Our water company provides this info whenever I submit a reading from our water meter. Mostly it’s two of us in the house but whenever the kids/relatives have been staying our usage increases as you can see from the history. Ever since we went on a water meter I have been more water conscious eg turning the tap off when cleaning my teeth, not leaving taps running in general, if it’s yellow/let it mellow etc. Just trying to be more mindful.

Wow, sounds like we are quite excessive then! No idea where it's all going - we don't leave taps running, water the garden with the hose (we have water butts) or have baths or super long showers. And we definitely don't have leaks. 🤔
