Was this too much food?

We went to a Thai restaurant this evening. DH and I, plus two DC (8 and 5).

We ordered as starters

  • two spring rolls for DH
  • papaya salad for me
  • chicken satay (4 sticks, for the kids to share)

And for mains

  • pad thai to share
  • massaman curry for me
  • a vegetable dish with oyster sauce for kids to share
  • fried rice with tofu for DH
  • two plain rice side dishes

The server said we had ordered too much. I said we were hungry and would take home any leftovers. We ate almost everything, and left with some of the vegetable dish.

At the time I felt proud of my kids for eating thai food full of vegetables and new flavours. Now I feel like we were pigs and ate/ordered way too much.

We don‘t eat out often because I have an eating disorder and prefer being able to count calories. The servers comments have sent me
into a spiral, although I know they were just trying to avoid food waste.

Do you think we ordered too much?

Anyone remember the 'Going for an English' sketch from Goodness Gracious Me? 24 plates of chips!

"I'll have the steak and kidney pee"

I think the server was trying to be helpful and as PP said, they probably didn’t think your children would eat much.

There’s plenty of ways to be rude to diners without turning away money.

Server was wrong. Sounds lovely and not too much. Perhaps they were commenting on the side rice dishes when DH already had a rice dish? Either way, rice is lovely and your meals sounds delicious and great for a family!

Please don't give it any more thought it's a server issue not a you issue!! That's a very normal/moderate order. I'm not a big eater and I could manage that out. A starter between your kids and a main between your kids isn't a lot and how much less could you possibly have ordered?

I love pad Thai & I love green curry, but as a vegetarian, it's often not suitable. But if it is that's my order and everyone else had better keep their sticky mitts off it!!🤣🤣

Please don't let it spoil the great night out you had with DH and your kids!!

You didn’t even order a main each. If the comment was said while ordering, maybe server was trying to say that portions are massive. Otherwise, an unnecessary comment.

This sounds like a pretty standard order for a family of 4, dont give it a second thought!

They were definitely surprised at how
much the kids ate! They actually love vegetables and curries, and are both on 20-25 percentile so far from fat. They just like to eat, especially in restaurants. I‘m desperately trying to avoid passing on my issues, and the server’s comments have made me question myself.

So.

Did they actually say you'd ordered too much or were they just surprised that your children had eaten food from a different cuisine and so it was more of an indirect comment about how nice that was and how they normally get families asking if they do chicken nuggets for the kids? And so actually a positive thing?

Because I certainly had comments when mine were younger about how nice it was that I hadn't asked for a 'children's menu' and that the children just ate what we did. Somewhere we went to regularly said a lot of parents just asked for nuggets and chips.
