Ottoman beds

Boring thread I know but who has an ottoman bed and do you like them?
I bought one a few weeks ago had to return it because there was a design issue that caused it to bow and now I’m sleeping on a mattress on the floor and need to find a new one.
My boyfriend who doesn’t live with me but has an opinion on everything tells me they’re likely to break sooner rather than later.
Whereas my sister owns one and thinks they’re great.

I’d like the storage but any horror stories should I just get a divan?
Again I’m sorry it’s boring but please help I’ve a superking if it’s of any relevance

I have two- one I love and one I hate!

the good is from arista living and is five years old. It is good as it has feet and a solid base and is raised up off the floor by 1 inch. Arista do not seem to operate anymore

the Crap one is from Argos because the (dusk order failed l)but the both dusk and Argos arw awful.

there is no solid base or feet. The “base” is a this fabric and the bed and base sit directly on the floor. It’s so awful and shoddy. I can’t wait to get rid! I hate to store stuff in it as basically it’s just on the floor Angry

the storage is fab for out of season clothes and bedding

I don’t think artista operates anymore sadly but the website and bed desinger is still online so you can have a play. Ensure it has feet and base!

We’ve got two - our king size one and a child’s single bed one. Absolutely love them. They weren’t cheap though. Oldest one is about 7 years old and still completely fine.

Foodoverload · 03/04/2025 22:04

I have one and love it. It has a solid base I sleep on and raised off the floor with a wooden base. It’s solid. But I did pay quite a bit for it. The cheaper ones were slatted and you seemed to just store stuff on the floor. I reckon mine will last for years

Furniture village. Previous one was Dreams but they’re not around any more - but the new one looks more or less identical.

We have 2. Love them both. We have the type with solid boxes and tops. Lots of dust free storage that’s accessible.

Endlessopportunities · 04/04/2025 17:57

I have one that I purchased last year. I love it. I had always wanted one and when I bought a house I got one. Mine is a green velvet Tempur bed from dreams. I wasn’t planning on green but it was on offer so I could not refuse. I do advise you to see it in store if possible first, some have the storage split in two, and the height of the storage is also slightly different. I was very specific about what I wanted to store inside so I did my research first. I don’t tend to lift up the bed too often though as the mattress is very heavy and I can feel it.

JackJarvisEsq · 04/04/2025 18:01

I love mine it’s remote controlled so don’t even need to do any lifting

I got it from bensons and it’s approaching 5 years old. You wouldn’t know it it’s as good as the day we got it

Daintydino · 04/04/2025 18:07

If you want a real horror story someone did actually get killed by their ottoman bed as it closed on her and trapped her head.

I really like mine!

Reallybadidea · 04/04/2025 18:22

I have a Dusk one with a fabric 'base'. I'm really happy with it, don't understand what other people's issues are with things being in (indirect) contact with the floor.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/04/2025 18:48

I’ve got one in the spare room. It’s fine.

PhantomErik · 04/04/2025 18:53

We've got a superking from Bensons which I absolutely love but it's only about a year old so can't comment on long term durability.

Namechangermagic · 05/04/2025 08:53

The one I bought was from dreams and it was more of a frame with a solid base very expensive, the storage did go on the floor so that’s interesting I’ve been thinking of getting a divan based one with 2 sides to replace

I feel like I can’t show my face in dreams after all the hoopla of getting it returned 😂

Whats an ottoman bed as opposed to a divan?

Divan is the thing with drawers is it?

Endlessopportunities · 05/04/2025 12:55

In my opinion the difference in storage between a divan and an ottoman bed is significant. If that is not your priority I’d be looking at how well made is the base the mattress sits on as that will start to make noise as you turn in bed. I would not use an ottoman bed more than once a week anyway so the risk of that going wrong is minimal in my opinion. If storage wasn’t much of an issue and I had the money to spend, I’d buy a French stule
bed from
feather and black. But that is for the next house. Until then, I’ll be day dreaming;)

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/04/2025 12:59

Dc (older teens) both have ottoman beds from Ikea. One is a single, the other a double and they’re very pleased with them. Their rooms aren’t massive and the extra, easily accessible storage is fantastic.

There is a problem with lack of airflow. Rooms can have problems with condensation hence all the damp problems and mould you read about.

if there us no damp in a room you may not have a problem but many people have found that even though they thought their room was fine, when they move or empty their bed, that they have lots of ruined bedding and the mattress is ruined too.

any mould and you have to throw it away.

Divan is a solid base. It can be a wooden frame with upholstery. Or a box with or without drawers. Or partially or fully sprung. When sprung they have springs like a mattress. Usually a bit firmer. It adds to the dynamic support of the mattress.
an ottoman is a box with a lid that opens. It can be a solid lid or more commonly a slatted lid.

TartanMammy · 05/04/2025 16:43

We've have them in every room as small house the storage is really useful. They were not cheap, custom made by a company called bed guru. Never had any issue with them.
