King Donald has bigly new tariffs, First Lady Elmo turns out to be ballot box poison and 'Pick Me Girl' Vance is a meanie to the EU.

(But at least the penguins on the Heard and McDonald Islands are wearing suits)

Two things.

  1. Waiting for China's response to the latest tariff hike.
  2. Apple charted planes to fly 600 tonnes /1.5 million iPhones from India to the US.
Igotjelly · 10/04/2025 16:19

Probably takes 90 days for Trump’s brain to kick into gear and decide on his next grift…

Talkinpeace · 10/04/2025 16:28

I am so glad that the war in Ukraine is over and that Putin is no longer bombing homes and schools.

I am so glad that the conflict in Gaza is over and that ll the hostages are home.

I am so glad that eggs are cheaper in the USA.

But isn't it great that people who get their water from private wells are allowed a powerful shower again.

Trump tariffs on China now 145%, White House confirms to CNBC

The overall US tariff rate on Chinese imports has risen to 145%, a White House official has confirmed to CNBC.

SerendipityJane · 10/04/2025 17:17

He has revealed himself now with his comment that it is a good time to buy shares.

What he means is that no enough morons rushed to do it the first time. (I can picture him in the Oval Office going "Jeez do i have to do everything myself ?")

So be prepared for it all to happen again, to fleece more suckers. And he will keep going until they have nothing and he has everything.

Incidentally, with the 80th anniversary of VE day creeping up, has anyone else had the thought that the 80th anniversary of using atomic weapons could only be marked by someone, somewhere dropping a nuclear weapon ?

No ?

Just me then.

American companies placed orders for goods assuming they would cost $100
now they will cost $245

Either buyers will cancel - empty shelves in the USA
Or they will have to pass the cost on to American customers

For smaller businesses, cash flow will probably dictate that orders are cancelled, where they can.

I'm looking forward to the spin on why Trump eventually backs out of this one, realising that it's not a game he can win against China.

Talkinpeace · 10/04/2025 17:28

@PickAChew
I wonder what cancellation terms Chinese suppliers started putting on shipped orders when Trump won the election ?

Been a while since I was at the coalface of import/export, but I have a vague feeling that "tariffs changing" isn't an excuse for cancelling an order once despatched.

It may also be problematic to cancel orders that have had to be custom made.

The big player can probably cope. But SMEs are in a very precarious position.

When will people cancel their GOP subscriptions and donations ?

Trump: "We're letting people build their own power plants. A lot of them are being built with the AI and beyond the AI. Chips. We're letting them build their own power. Never been done before ... they'll sort of be their own power company. They couldn't believe it when I told them that."

DH said that Google have been building their own power plant. It sounds like some trumpsplaining has been going on.

Mrsbloggz · 10/04/2025 18:31

The language is called trumpton-simpleton-ese. Remember the old Rupert Bear annuals, trump can only process the rhyming couplets, the prose is too hard & he cant concentrate for long enough to understand it.
And those fecking eeejits are all fawning over him and praising him, UURRGGGHH

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/04/2025 18:34

Building my own power plant in the back garden was exactly how I was planning to spend my weekend. Hope the neighbours don’t mind too much.

WTF is he even on about this time.

Igotjelly · 10/04/2025 18:42

It’s a big issue though the media sanitising what Trump says so he sounds sensible(ish). When his words are written down verbatim they sound bat shit and semi literate.

Watch out Iran.

Your right. I'd like to retract that statement as I realise it is unfair to all the 10 year olds out there who would at least ask an adult for help.

Maybe a toddler- thinks he knows everything, wants to be the centre of attention, regular tantrums.

But toddlers have more empathy and do listen to reason even if they forget it quickly.

Trump is a bigley orange (hopefully) one of a kind. Not sure that’s good Vance etc have the same ethics but more control of themselves.

Let's not forget that Trump is also trying to shake down with menaces 'negotiate' a deal with the EU. Then he paused tariffs without any mention of his previous demand.

From the Telegraph. Trump's 'drill, baby, drill' boom is already imploding

All of which could help explain one of Trump’s boldest demands to date, as he called for the EU to buy $350bn (£275bn) of American oil and gas to lift tariffs. “We have a deficit with the European Union of $350bn and it’s going to disappear fast,” Trump told a press briefing earlier this week. “One of the ways that that can disappear easily and quickly is they’re going to have to buy our energy from us ... They can buy it, we can knock off $350bn in one week. They have to buy and commit to buy a similar amount of energy.”
It was a remark, insiders say, that created both confusion and clarity for the EU’s negotiators. Confusion because Trump’s demands were so irrational that the EU could never agree to them and clarity because it showed how unlikely it was that Brussels would ever win a trade deal.

I'm not sure why the EU would want a trade deal with the US - economically, they're competitors to each other, aren't they?

The EU is one of the USA's biggest trading partners so having a trade deal isn't about competition but about setting out the rules enabling access to each other's markets without much red tape. The win-win benefits to both parties are economic stability, regulatory cooperation (which makes adhering to eg safety standards in each others' country less onerous and costly), and soft power geopolitical support.
