Hair Botox and other treatments not working on my hair

I have fairly normal SE Asian hair. It's become more coarse and very grey as I've aged. It's always been pretty resistant to getting dyed. It takes at least 3 hours to colour my roots using professional dye at the hair dressers. Occasionally it needs to be redone when the colour doesn't take properly.

I've had straightening treatments in the past which have worked well, but the last 3 times it just hasn't taken.

2 years ago I had the New Hair straightening treatment which didn't make my hair any smoother. My hairdresser then did it again a couple of months later and still no joy.

I've since changed hairdressers so I tried again with Hair Botox and it's not taken again.

I'm £150 down and my hair is no different. I could cry as my husband was aghast at me spending that much on a hair service.

I'm late 40's and definitely menopausal and wonder if that has an affect.

I really want to grow out my grey and would feel more confident if my hair was at least smooth. But it's a coarse frizzy mess and makes me feel like shit.

I'll see if I can add pictures.

When my hair was at its worst the hairdresser told me to stop looking to pay to make my hair better and just start looking after it. She said to drink more water, eat more avocados, eggs, apples. She said to start using an oil whenever I can and leave on any conditioner for twenty minutes once a week. She said to always use and oil and forget the pricy ones, she said the argan from pennys or a macadamia one from a health food shop was best. Tiny amount massage through to ends. She said always use heat protection spray and calm down on heat styling except when I need it.

Hopefully something can help you here, it ducks when your hair feels awful

Have you tried any curly/wavy hair products? Mine is also frizzy- although not SE Asian - and I have found using wavy hair products has really tamed the frizz.

This is my hair after the treatment. It should have been silky, smooth and shiny.

L’Oréal professional do a wash out hair serum which has made my frizzy sad coarse menopausal absolutely beautiful

@stayathomerthanks for the reply. I have a pretty good diet and eat mostly home cooked food from scratch. Plenty of fruit and vegetables and salad daily.

I've tried all manner of oils but none make a difference. I only wash my hair once a week and will use a hairdryer to dry it and maybe a straightener once in a couple of weeks.

I've also tried expensive shampoos and cheap ones, sls free, salt free, silicone free etc. My hair is just crap now and it makes no difference what I use.

Oh god sorry to hear that op. Hope someone comes forward with a solution. I wonder are there any supplements that support better hair over menopause?

@HighlandhardrainI do have some curly hair products which I'll try. I bought them for my daughter who had pin straight hair until she turned 16, then suddenly developed waves!

@notnorman Ooh, I'm pleased you found something that works for you. Do you have the name? I'll check it out.

It just looks very dry from over processing to me. Would you grow it out to your natural colour?

Hurrylater · 01/04/2025 22:42

@Cookerhood I'm in the process of growing it out. I had it highlighted about 4 months ago as the contrast was too harsh. This is 8 weeks of regrowth.

Your hair looks Bleach damaged. Keep going with the grow out, the root colour looks gorgeous!

It just looks fried tbh, I would do what a pp said for the new growth. My hair has found new joy with curlsmith (grey, curly) leave in conditioner (all purpose).
