Maintaining a garden in rented property - any gardening advice?

Our garden was nicely done when we moved in two years ago. I don’t know the first thing about gardening but I was able to maintain it for the first year. But then I think heavy rain, winds and our fence getting knocked over them might have finished some of the flower bushes off.

We are thinking about moving in 6 months. Is there an expectation to replace the bushes?Contract is vague on this point and just refers to maintenance. I would actually like to plant some wild flowers in their place but if they aren’t liked then I would imagine they will be a pain to pull out.

Any gardening advice is much appreciated!

Could you ask your LL if you are comfortable with that? In our case our tenants asked what they could do to the garden and we had a chat about what they wanted to do etc. Some of it was permanent so we ended up either paying for it or contributing to it and other bits they want to take with them when they eventually leave.

Do NOT plant wild flowers , they are not suitable for you. If you plant anything make it low maintenance shrubs.

If you plant anything you might want to keep, put them in pots or planters. I think anything in the ground has to stay there.

Were they growing ok last summer? Might just not have started into growth yet - still early in the season. Give them a little while before pulling anything out!

Photos would help people judge whether the bushes in question are dead or just haven't got going yet.
