Hayfever - anyone else strugging?

Today is bad! Streaming nose and eyes.

they stopped making Nasacort, which I found very good. Apparently there's nothing with the equivalent ingredient. Chemist gave me Pirinase, doesn't seem to be helping much.

might try the Superdrug service to get Avamys but not sure.

I know the pollen is high but also wonder if I might be starting a cold. How is everyone else doing? It's definitely worse in the afternoon.

Solidarity! I usually get it mid season but can already feel the back of my throat giving out 😫 you can get Nasacort on private prescription online, that’s what I did last year but I think I’ll be getting the jab (again private as NHS won’t do it!) hoping for a milder season this year 🤞🏼

EmeraldRoulette · 31/03/2025 17:31

Thank you @mumboyof1

I couldn't find anyone who has it. The initial search says yes but if you click through, it's out of stock and further googling (also the chemist) says they stopped making it.

I caught an article on TV the other day and the doctor on the show advised starting to take antihistamines before the pollen count started to rise.

It affects my eyes mainly, so I started taking cetirizine hydrochloride last week and have so far managed OK.

Obviously different things work differently on different people, but I hope you manage to find something to ease the symtpoms.

AllTheChaos · 31/03/2025 17:36

I’ve not been on it this year as so much on, woke up today with eyes gummed shut.

sigh.

justasking111 · 31/03/2025 17:40

Yep for the last month. Last night my throat was scratchy. I've been coughing up the last month. The dogs make it worse, so I've stripped the throws off today and washed them. The pets are bringing in pollen 😭

VeryNiceDay · 31/03/2025 17:54

We've had hayfever since January this year, which has never happened before.

I used a nasal hepa filter, which is enough for me. I can't find an antihistamine that I can tolerate.

EmeraldRoulette · 31/03/2025 18:26

@AllTheChaos oh no, I feel for you

@RampantIvy I did start about three weeks ago I think - it's hit me hard regardless.

not sure what to look for next. Nasacort used to work pretty much immediately.

I've been struggling today in particular, been dosed up for a few weeks.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 31/03/2025 18:43

Fexofenedine, 120 over the counter or 180 from the GP x

EBearhug · 31/03/2025 18:54

Fexofenadine didn't do much for me. Nor does loratidine (Clarityn.)

TheeNotoriousPIG · 31/03/2025 19:23

Having tried a whole range of medications, I tried fexofenadine (Allevia) off the back of similar previous threads, and it's wonderful (for me). I use Optrex hay-fever eye drops to control The Itch.

You could also try Pollinosan (a herbal remedy), which did quite well for me up until I switched to Allevia.

Bunnycat101 · 31/03/2025 19:39

Mine is normally grass so much later in the year but I can feel it is starting much earlier than normal for me. No idea if there is something that normally affects those of us who react to grass early or if pollen is just super high in general at the moment. Either way it’s very annoying.

EmeraldRoulette · 31/03/2025 20:31

Funnily enough, I took fenowitsit in addition the last two days, I forgot to say that.

I'll give it a couple of days and maybe then try Superdrug doctor for something stronger.

thank you for the solidarity and advice, sorry for those suffering xx

i take 4 Zyrtec a day for hives. Started a new injection which means I don’t need as many antihistamines
Had always said I don’t have hay fever
turns out I do Blush but I’ve been on such high doses of antihistamines for 28 years I didn’t know!
so empathy here
I am back to 4 Zyrtec a day…

AnnaMagnani · 31/03/2025 21:04

@luna25 same!

Have chronic urticaria, used to take 4x fexofenadine a day + 4x cetirizine.

Thought I didn't have hayfever (but got a cold every spring).

Now I only take 1 cetirizine a day and totally have hayfever. Like you I just ramp up the anti-histamines.

Do you still have the urticaria? I’m on Xolair now and it’s been life changing

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 31/03/2025 21:44

Try Avamys from your GP or if that's no good Dymista. Please don't be tempted to get kenalog, there is a reason the NHS don't give it.

What jab is that, please? I have 24/7/365 rhinitis, plus bad hayfever at the mo.

AnnaMagnani · 31/03/2025 22:26

@luna25 yes but mine doesn't sound nearly as bad as yours.

20 years on and just sometimes I need an extra cetirizine when a hive turns up.

mindingmyown37 · 31/03/2025 22:33

Yep, looked like I was full on crying earlier, I do have a condition where my eyes water however this came with sneezing and an itchy nose, also feels different. So I know it’s hayfever. Never had it before my dd12 was born, now it gets worse and worse every year.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 31/03/2025 22:38

If you google pollen counts at Worcester.ac you can see which pollens are affecting you

Alder is just declining but Birch is taking off rapidly. There are also a number of mould spores currently causing issues and weed pollens are due to start shortly

Avamys is the best nasal spray currently available but has been in short supply for over a year and Fexofenidine is one of the best anti histamines currently, I also use Azelastine nasal spray which acts in a different way to topical steroids

if you’re really suffering you could consider an air purifier, I run 2 in the house and have a small neck worn personal one for use outside that gives about 1m coverage and really has helped me (airtimer)

MoonlightMemories · 31/03/2025 22:59

Ooh gosh yes, I have been miserable this past week particularly - I'm really quite bad with tree pollen and then later on the grass for me is as well. I'm having to take multiple ceterizines and 2-3 120mg fexofenadines currently to try to control my symptoms...I'll sometimes take a diphenhydramine hydrochloride (own brand/nytol original sleep aid) at night as well if it's still really bad, as that also helps with me getting to sleep.

My sneezing has been particularly severe as has the nasal/eye streaming. I've actually been feeling properly like, really washed out and tired at times from the severity of my symptoms. Coughing quite a lot too - not a known asthmatic or anything, but obviously my body is really not very happy right now with all these irritants/allergens getting into it.

EmeraldRoulette · 31/03/2025 23:21

@MoonlightMemories yes I feel quite unwell with it, which is why I posted. If everyone was fine, I'd be inclined to think it was a cold as I feel a bit like that. The streaming itchy eyes are the worst though.

I bought an air purifier a couple of years ago, found it no help at all sadly.

I’ve only had hayfever one year, ages ago, and wondering if it’s hitting me this year! My nose has been SOOOOO itchy today!!! Started a couple of days ago but I was going mad today! Just taken a piriton and kept shoving Vaseline up my nose this afternoon. I had a cold from Jan until a few days ago. Then straight into hayfever! Fun!

Apparently the pollen count is only medium though? Met office says low and medium, no highs in the country? And tree pollen this time of year apparently? 🤷‍♀️

Also, itchy eyes starting. And my pelvic floor is horrendous so that’s not fun with the sneezing!

Gelatibon · 01/04/2025 00:08

DP's seems to have hit the last couple of days, he's been blaming flowers everywhere he goes for Mother's Day (including the ones he bought and sat in the car with for his mum).

Whatever it's been he's looked awful for a couple of days.
