Watching one of mg favourite films again, (Easy A) and it’s got Amanda Bynes in it.

I still feel so sorry for her. She was so talented and I loved her movies and it’s sad to see how she is now. I genuinely hope she gets all the help she needs

Danny Baker posted an offensive meme on Instagram. He lost his job, rightly, and was absolutely vilified. No newspaper printed or supported that.
I am very sorry that Meghan's had severe MH problems, but there could be many and various reasons for that.

I don't think any amount of money helps if you are stuck in an abusive, controlling relationship with somone so manipulative that you daren't leave for fear of the consequences.

I agree with this, it must be terrible to feel trapped.

PoppysAunt · 30/03/2025 11:16

I also feel sorry for Marilyn Monroe. She was badly exploited. She dearly wanted a baby, but miscarried and spiralled into worse MH. No-one seemed to be able to help her.

Coconutter24 · 30/03/2025 10:25

It is but you made it come across like their choice was wrong and then brought gender into it.

Because I believe the choice to defend or make excuses for domestic abusers is wrong.

And gender is directly relevant here as there’s no such sympathy for men who beat up women on this forum.

Hugh Hefner bought the grave next to hers. Even in death she couldn't escape arsehole men.

Oh my god. I don't know why, but that's really disgusted me. That man was completely vile and acted with impunity.

@Charlize43 For me it's Marilyn Monroe. Abused by her mum, put into care and a series of homes where she was sexually abused.

Slept with directors to get parts, handed around to famous men like chattel. Kennedy had sex with her, got bored then passed her on to his brother.

Married an abuser. Slated for being too sexy and for being dumb. Addicted and in therapy for years. Eventually kills herself.

Have you read Monroe's sister's book? It's a very interesting read as it presents another telling of the Monroe story.

The interesting thing about Monroe's story is that it was mythologised early on by both Monroe & the studio. Since then, her life is seen through so many lenses; that of victim, that she was used up and destroyed by Hollywood, and more recently that she was a clever and savvy businesswoman who worked out that she could sell sex to get what she wanted, that she had renegotiated a better and more powerful contract by the time she died, that she was one of the first to have her own production company (Lucille Ball had her own studio in the 50s). There are so many versions (and angles) of Monroe that the truth is harder to find and somewhere in there. Sometimes, it feels like it depends on who is telling the story and to what generation they are selling it to. Fame is such a weird thing, even how we consume it and our fascination with it.

One thing is for sure, Monroe was definitely another victim of addiction & substance abuse: It's not surprising that she was experiencing a catalogue of mental health problems (depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, chronic insomnia) and her life was unravelling, as she was addicted to amphetamines, barbiturates washed down daily with copious amounts of alcohol. These women probably weren't making their best decisions.

I adore Marilyn, devoured books on her in my younger days and just feel a real love and affection for her. There is a quote from her that on the surface sounds vulgar but I felt nothing but compassion for her. It was when she finally made it and no longer had to appease the powers that be (ie lecherous, predatory studio power men - “I have scked my last cck). She was flawed sure but a beautiful human.

Presumably she wasn’t forced to marry Trump though ?

I wonder why she chose to marry a multi-millionaire?

As Mrs Merton once said to Debbie McGee, What attracted you to the multi millionaire Donald Trump?

Loubelou71 · 30/03/2025 11:42

Michael Barrymore. I used to love all his stuff.

UrsulasHerbBag · 30/03/2025 11:42

Didn’t Hefner acquire her naked shots of Marilyn (taken before fame) and launch playboy with them? Marilyn got not say in it, gave no permission and received no money. Lots of sympathy for her and others like her that were manipulated and used to make money for other people.

Real as in I don’t realise it was all pre scripted - as a kid I remember thinking wow they come up with them clever answers so fast 😂

Oh god, I used to think the same thing and it has never occurred to me before that they weren't off the cuff. Even though it's obvious now 🤦.

Princess Charlene of Monaco, she's had to put up with Albert's serial philandering, him having children outside their marriage, she tried to escape but couldn't, Probably couldn't leave her childen, she often looks incredibly sad.

Not the slightest bit sorry for Melania. She sold her soul for money. And she stays with him for money. I find her really awful. I hope she loathes her husband because she will then realise what she's done for money every time she has to look at him.

Meghan... she is used as the villain all over the world, so many vile people making huge amounts of money writing articles, youtubing disgusting stuff about her. I hope her MH is holding up because it's relentless

One thing I’m sure about is Melania loathes her husband. She couldn’t look any more repulsed by him if she tried 😁 I think she stays because she adores Baron and wants to make sure he is ok.

Michael Barrymore. I used to love all his stuff.

So did I but watching it back through adult eyes his act seems to have a mean tinge to it.

That coupled with his actions and lack of sympathy or consideration towards the Lubbock family makes it difficult for me to induce sympathy for him.

That's a horrible quote.

Hollywood is such a cesspit. I remember being disturbed for days when reading about Natalie Wood, who had been a child star (another pushy, stagestruck mother, like Judy Garland) who was sexualised and sleeping with her director, Nicholas Ray, aged 44, at age 16. Why would you want to put your child in that environment? These men were basically paedophiles!

Vile.

Samcro · 30/03/2025 11:51

Mary Berry. seeing her talk about her son dying at 19, so sad.
Toby Jones, his daughter dying.

No one is making excuses or defending the actions but equally we can sympathise with someone who made a mistake and it cost them their life. If she was regularly beating him and abusing him then my sympathies would be different but this example I do sympathise with her

Sorry, that's made me laugh

Even worse some other sick arsehole bought a grave on top of her and asked to be buried face down so it’s like he’s having sex with her 😡🤮

Sorry to speak ill of the dead but I thought he came across as an awful human being in his book. Horrible misogynistic who only speaks about women in terms of whether he want to fuck them, really creepy about how much he fancied Jennifer aniston and only spoke about his female co-stars good looks. Had to hire a lesbian as his PA as he said he can only have professional relationships with women he can’t fuck. Really self centred and arrogant, saying he changed the face of comedy forever. Really bitter about the reviewers who said his play was awful.

and what the hell was all that hate towards Keanu!?!? A man who is known to be wonderful and kind.

really nasty, horrible man.

Crikey, that’s all news to me 😱 I assumed he was one of the nice guys (but troubled). Just goes to show you really don’t know about a celebrity the way you think you do.

Michael Schumacher.. I was very much not a fan of his as a driver, but from what snippets of information have come out he’s had a pretty terrible time since his accident.

I do wonder if they're doing what he would have wanted, the family have more or less put their lives on hold since 2013. He participated in a dangerous sport, Formula 1, he must have accepted the risks that brought and he chose a potentially dangerous hobby, ski-ing.

PoppysAunt · 30/03/2025 12:01

Oh my god, @Charlize43 - shocking.
I was very distressed when I read about Brooke Shields.
Trigger warning
Brooke was a model and actress from an early age, and was in several controversial films, including Louis Malle's Pretty Baby, which featured her naked at the age of 11.
She also posed for Playboy at this age, the details of which are sickening.
Why people haven't been charged over this, I don't know.

We can put it down to the fact we were kids and naive 😉 I do feel a pleb now though 😆
