I want to be 18 again and getting ready in my bedroom for a Friday night

In my bedroom at my parents house
90s music playing
I'm tiny and have a huge wardrobe
No idea where the night will take us
Pubs are busy, I'll probably get a few drinks brought for me
I'm going out with £20 for the whole night

Happy days

Sounds brilliant, take me back!!

anon168231245630 · 28/03/2025 22:23

I did this in the early 00s and it was the best nights out ever. Leaving the house at 9 or 10pm. Pre drinks at home. £30 and that was your chips and taxi home too. To do it all over again tomorrow night.

itsjustbiology · 28/03/2025 22:28

OP you read my mind. I have just dropped my son off in the city centre and I was observing all these beautiful bright young things looking outrageously alive and I felt old. I mean I am old I could be their grandmother I guess but just for a second oh how I would have loved to trade places with them.

AnniePavlova · 28/03/2025 22:31

Oh happy days. Take me back to 1992!

OnlyTheBravest · 28/03/2025 23:03

Out on Thursday & Friday nights. Recovering on Saturday morning with the omnibus episodes of Sunset Beach! Heading back out on Saturday night.

Illegal cabs home or the misery of the night bus from Trafalgar square.

@1AnotherOne Oh yes the Blue Orchid, many misspent nights were at the Orchid. When Croydon nightlife was the place to be!

2chocolateoranges · 28/03/2025 23:08

Oh those were the days.

Thursday night out with my college girls in town, with a taxi back to one of their houses to stay over and I’m sure we went in drunk to college every Friday.

I was 18 in 1994. Girls night at the local on a Friday night where we all met at a friends house and drank vodka and coke before heading down to our local for karaoke and a dance. I have loads of great memories and actually met my dh on one of these nights.

Then a Saturday night out with my boyfriend(now dh) he used to pick me up from work, we got a Chinese then he dropped me home to get ready and then he came back for me and we went out.

then woke up on a Sunday at his and watched holly oaks, Dawson creek and had a lazy Sunday. Those were the days for definite.

loved my weekends.

I can't work out whether all the pp on this thread are seeing things through rose coloured glasses or whether they really did have wonderful, carefree , exciting teenage years.
How did you all manage such problem free lives? How were you all so confident and care free?
A different reality from a lot of us.

LikeSeriously · 28/03/2025 23:22

Ah good times. I have an 18 year old daughter and the girls often gather here to get ready. I bring them food and drinks and just love seeing them living their best lives. 🥰

I loved the lazy lie ins too. Once my bf (now husband) and I were proper serious, and spending most weekends together, I'd take his car on a Saturday morning (he had a flashy sporty car, mine was a fiesta 😂) and go for a sunbed (!!!), go home to mine (parents house), nap, then spend ages getting ready to go back to his then out for dinner/cinema. Those are the days I'd go back to, rather than the clubbing days tbh. Smiling just thinking about how happy and carefree we were 😊

@SoChangethenameagain of course there were the usual teenage dramas along the way that sex/hormones/alcohol/drugs bring but that’s another thread I think.

I’m just enjoying a sense of nostalgia for the ceremony of getting ready when you are young, attractive and responsibility free (as were your friends) . As a pp said there was the sense of excitement and possibilities for the night ahead. And who wouldn’t enjoy a night out that kicked off with a bottle of lukewarm lambrini!

Well I suppose I never lived in a world where I was secure in my attractiveness and all my friends were equally secure in their attractiveness.
I find it hard to imagine that level of self confidence.

We did not have social media or smart phones, so you had to socialise with your friends. The expectation was that you were going out. You wanted to because everyone was there. Most people had Saturday jobs, so you could afford to go out. Of course there were teen dramas but nothing compared to what people go through now.

I feel sad that teens/young adults nowadays will never experience a carefree entry to adulthood.

90swithcigarettesandalcohol · 28/03/2025 23:41

Well insecurity comes with teenage territory too. I think your friends validate you though at that stage so whatever your ‘look’ was your friends were also wearing similar and you’d have each others backs.

ThisPinkBee · 28/03/2025 23:41

God no, taking magic mushrooms and going to a house party or trance club. I'm happy just listening to the occasional song now!

1971 for me - long hair, dark eye make-up, muslin kaftan top, Levi jeans, Scholl sandals, silver jewellery and reeking of Patchouli oil. Meeting friends in a student pub but not a very late night as I had a Saturday job to get up for.

Should have kept that gear as it's all back in the shops...

Leafy2018 · 28/03/2025 23:50

My weekends started on Thursday - pound a pint/alcohol night… best night of the week. Went out for a tenner (probably including taco home after being bought drinks). Feeling the bees knees in my plether trousers from Bay Trading and short black sleeveless top that said ‘Flirt’ on it in purple glittery letters. So classy. Couldn’t wait to see the dj in the pub and felt so VIP being let up into his bit overlooking the dance floor (so we could get up to stuff in there while he was spinning his tunes). Happy days!

Leafy2018 · 28/03/2025 23:51

Taxi not taco - never rode a taco home. Even on my wildest nights.

I thought you meant a taco from a takeaway 😂

I don’t know how old you are - I was 18 in the 1980s and I think there was less pressure on people then, no one was expected to look perfect.

Well you might remember the Janis Ian song " At seventeen".
That's the world I identify with.

At 18 I was at college, worked part time, had no responsibilities, still lived at home and lived for the weekend. Carefree is exactly how I was, not very confident but just living life and having fun like most of my friends were.

get to town, £1 a pint of cider, Discoteque Royales, burger, taxi home all for less than £20. Ahhh the good old days
Most of us had Saturday jobs to get up for so Sat night I would collapse on the sofa. That was the best feeling when you are so tired but content! Now it takes me 3 days to recover if I go out 🤣

I like 21 piccadilly too fell down the stairs on the way out once.
Royales I used to go up to the top where the jump seats where and snog a boy lol.

TaggieO · 29/03/2025 00:24

God I can close my eyes and picture it! Those ridiculous little glitter crocodile clips in my hair, buffalo trainers, slip dresses and t shirts underneath. Pencil thin eyebrows. Oh god and CK one. I loved that stuff!! Vodka mixed with anything we could get our hands on, Smirnoff ice, reef,
aftershock.

CoolPlayer · 29/03/2025 00:26

The days when I could drink and be fully recovered by the next afternoon it’d be more like 4 days to recover now! I struggle to believe I ever used to enjoy shots you couldn’t pay me to do them now..I’m old 😂

ladeedar · 29/03/2025 00:47

Love this thread! We’d catch the bus into town. Feeling nervous but excited. Tequila shots were 50p at the bar in town. Had 10 B&H and £20 in my bag for drinks and chips at the end 🤣

Not a real care in the world.
