I want to be 18 again and getting ready in my bedroom for a Friday night

In my bedroom at my parents house
90s music playing
I'm tiny and have a huge wardrobe
No idea where the night will take us
Pubs are busy, I'll probably get a few drinks brought for me
I'm going out with £20 for the whole night

Happy days

1971 for me - long hair, dark eye make-up, muslin kaftan top, Levi jeans, Scholl sandals, silver jewellery and reeking of Patchouli oil. Meeting friends in a student pub but not a very late night as I had a Saturday job to get up for.

Mum shouting upstairs that we (me and my 2 best friends) sound like a herd of elephants as we dance about and get ready. But she's bought us a bottle of cider to share so...
Hot pants 70 denier tights platform wedges little top tiny handbag (or everything in pockets if we're in jeans)

Cans of cider on bus into town. Few different bars then a club. Knew most of the bouncers at our regular haunts.

Dancing all night/toilet gossip/smoking inside

Night bus home if we'd spent taxi money.
Mum bringing us tea and toast in bed because she was a bloody legend.

Great times (late 80s early 90s)

Northern soul records on, line's of speed whilst getting ready and heading off to an allniter somewhere in the UK.

Those were the days!! I would roll in at 2am, then get up at 7 and go to work (probably still drunk), come home, shower, tea, and off out again! Sundays I wouldn’t surface until mum had brought me tea and biscuits 😆

I used to love Sunday mornings, when I lived at home in a Sunday morning my dad would go to play golf, me my sister and mum would have lots of tea and toast, watching the Hollyoaks omnibus, filling my mum in on everything that happened on our Saturday nights out. I miss those days!

Mirabai · 28/03/2025 20:21

80s - listening to Soul II Soul or Prince while getting ready to go clubbing.

Bonjovispyjamas · 28/03/2025 20:22

Those were the days 🥰 And hair practically rock hard from too much silvikrin hairspray 😆

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 28/03/2025 20:23

I used to work Friday nights in one of the towns best pubs. I absolutely loved it, loved the atmosphere, loved flirting with all the hot guys, loved all the free drinks. I was in my element.

Some of the guys from college would come down, I used to fancy one of them like crazy (I mean what 18 year old Grunge kid didn't love a lead guitarist from a band).

Saturday night was my night out. Then Sunday was the Hollyoaks omnibus.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2025 20:26

Ahh so it’s 2002! I’m 18 and getting ready for… the evening shift behind my local pub. I’ve got my hair in space buns with some hair glitter for some added pizazz, a lot of black eyeliner, a pub tshirt I’ve knotted and tucked under, short shorts and stupidly high heels that I could stomp all night in behind the bar. I’ve got my fags, lighter, phone and house key tucked in my bra (didn’t have much else to put in it 😂).
Would get bought shit loads of drinks while I was working and drink them all. Best job I ever had.

Wantitalltogoaway · 28/03/2025 20:26

Out dancing to Shania Twain and Ricky Martin, home in a taxi that would drop me off at the bottom of our lane, smelling of cigarette smoke, hoarse voice, taking my heels off to walk up the road as they sounded so loud I thought I’d wake the street 😂

hby9628 · 28/03/2025 20:26

Drinking southern comfort that my Dad would buy me each week to share with my friends. God rest his soul. I miss him.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2025 20:27

Oh, I have no doubt that I stank of Ralph Lauren Romance (along with the aforementioned fags 😂). Best times of my life!!

Noperope · 28/03/2025 20:30

Maybelline dream matt mouse
Body shop bronzing pearls
Heather shimmer lipstick

Enough gel and hairspray that it could qualify as chemical warfare. Outfits from Jane Norman, Miss Selfridge, Topshop and Mark One. We'd be drinking Smirnoff ice and Bacardi Breezers and listening to Garage. Blue Orchid in Croydon anyone?

PollyCreo · 28/03/2025 20:35

Oh yes it was the preparation and anticipation of going out! Getting ready in your friend's bedroom, having a sneaky drink and waiting for the taxi into town 😜

LeaveALittleNote · 28/03/2025 20:35

Same! Low rise jeans, or “hipsters” as we called them. Belly top and belly chain. We wore those lace up plimsoles with chunky wedge heels that were a few pounds from Primark. Other clothes from Mark One or from the local market stall, labels cut out.
”Your Woman” by Whitetown or “Space Man” by Babylon Zoo on the radio or as part of a mixtape.
Tiny handbag with a mini bottle of vodka stashed inside to top our cokes up with if we ran out of money. Ten Marlboro Lights.
Fake CK1 from the local market stall, and Rimmel makeup, some of which was nicked from Superdrug in town. Hair up in space buns. So full of hope for the night and for the future in general.

hby9628 · 28/03/2025 20:36

get to town, £1 a pint of cider, Discoteque Royales, burger, taxi home all for less than £20. Ahhh the good old days
Most of us had Saturday jobs to get up for so Sat night I would collapse on the sofa. That was the best feeling when you are so tired but content! Now it takes me 3 days to recover if I go out 🤣

Cucy · 28/03/2025 20:38

I loved being so carefree.

Now I’d be worried about having enough money, getting home safely, having images plastered all over SM etc.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 28/03/2025 20:41

This is making me nostalgic. I miss the little Tartan pinafore dress i had, I'd put black opaques and a black skinny rib top, then my converse on. The carefreeness of it all (and being a size 10).

Diorchristian · 28/03/2025 20:41

I had a stunning Jane Norman lace top.
Sometimes we would have such fun listening to music and getting ready stuff was closed by the time we made it out

PollyCreo · 28/03/2025 20:45

And the worry if you looked 18 😂 Not that the bouncers cared, as long as you were pretty they let you in 😱

Picle · 28/03/2025 20:50

Having cheap white wine or cider and cigarettes at home while getting ready to go into London. Tight black jeans, skimpy top and 4 inch high heels.
Get train into London then tube to Covent Garden. Drink and dance before getting the last train home, which was usually full of happy drunks munching on burgers or sandwiches.

I look back now incredulous that I walked around London all night in high heels!

the80sweregreat · 28/03/2025 20:53

I do get this feeling occasionally. Just the fact that my knees wouldn’t suffer , not like they would now .

Stressmode · 28/03/2025 21:00

1992 Diamond white and a Blastaway!

Wheech · 28/03/2025 21:02

Those were the days. Our local nightclub was licensed till 4am. I'd either sleep until 3pm the next day or else be up at 6am for an early shift in my weekend job in a petrol station. I remember one morning still being so drunk I couldn't see the till. Still made it out again the next night, after a short disco nap.

Feels like 2 minutes ago and also feels like a lifetime.

This was my era! Garage music and a tide line of maybelline dream matte - all makeup applied with fingers only. Maybe some foundation lips too 😂

coxesorangepippin · 28/03/2025 21:07

So much fun

Snogging loads of blokes

Dancing away

All for less than twenty quid
