Has anyone completed Passport application for a child under the age of 6 and uploaded there own photograph?

Easy or do they mostly come back as a fail?
If the image fails how long did it take to find out?
Thanks

Really easy to do, use your phone, just follow their rules in terms of background and smile etc.

W0tnow · 27/03/2025 12:18

They weren’t that young. 14 I think? I think of you follow the guidelines to the letter you’ll be ok. If I recall there is a sort of graphic after you upload which indicates the % probability that it will be accepted. Do not photoshop in any way, even if it is to zoom in or make the image sharper. They won’t accept anything that has been altered from the original.

Flippinec · 27/03/2025 12:18

Their software won’t let you upload it if it doesn’t pass their initial automated check btw

Bodonka · 27/03/2025 12:18

Yep, I’ve done it. Was so, so easy compared to going and getting the photos taken! There’s a part of the upload that scans the photo too and tells you if it’s likely to pass.

I just did dd's passport 😄

We had a photo taken and uploaded

Dd had her mouth open but was looking at the camera, and it went through okay

I paid for the photo to be taken but should've just done it myself!

When DDs photo failed, I just got an email asking for a new photo. Uploaded it a couple of hours later (when she was home from school) then it was approved soon after that.

Recieved it at the sane time as her sisters whose photo had passed.

Thanks everyone for the replies really helpful.

I’ve had 3 failed attempts at Photo places in Town and I need the passport in 4 weeks time.

I will get them done tomorrow.

anyone know if it has to be a white background?

Thanks all

Yes. White.

The trickiest thing is lighting. It needs to be light but in a way that creates no shadow behind the head. It took a few goes to sort this last time I did one but it wasn’t difficult.

I went to Timpsons as they use a handheld camera ten check them thoroughly. They also have a guarantee that if not acceptable then they’ll do them again free. I just had to put in the code from the wee ticket I had and it was accepted straight away. Ok it cost about £7 but cheaper than using a machine time and time, I don’t have a suitable background at home. I’d probably end up with Justin Beiber next to me or whoever the youngsters like these days if I tried a machine.

This is what we did. Took a few goes for DD's fringe to be acceptable. I think she models herself on Claudia Winkleman.

Oh yeah when I had a fringe I had to sweep it aside.

As far as remember, (did my online application 5.5 years ago,) you upload the photo first. And they tell you if it's OK/acceptable. So you don't waste your time doing the whole application, and then get the photo rejected. It 'okays' the photo first. We took ours with a magnolia wall background, face clear, no glasses, (even if you wear them normally,) no smile, just head and shoulders. Should be OK! Smile

Most difficult bit about home photos we found was avoiding shadow on the face or background. The online application tells you if it's likely to be accepted.

I applied for ds renewal 3 weeks ago and got an email today saying it's been printed - you might want to get a move on if you need it in 4 weeksi

Thank you everyone really has helped.

Am I right in thinking I can’t make a start until I have my nominated person details who will sign off that they know us?

thanks

Ive renewed 2 kids passports in the last few weeks and used the PO photo service where they give you a code and you pull in their photo automatically. Both worked first time and took 3 and a bit weeks, so get on with it I think!

HollyBerryz · 28/03/2025 11:00

How does the online application work? I need to apply for some passports but I'm unsure if I need to do them one at a time or if I can do them all at once now it's online? . 2 are adult renewals, 2 had children's passports but need an adults one and one is a child who's never had a pp. sorry for hijacking OP!

I have only done adult renewal lately but it is a very easy online form. Probably took less than 5 mins apart from taking the photo and posting through old one back. You put in your old passport number and they have all your details from that.

The photo took a while. The bot kept rejecting what I thought were well lit photos, but was happier with dimmer ones. I guess the shadows were less contrasting. So what looks to you like the best photo might not be what the bot likes. Stand away from the background.

You can start the application, but once you get to that stage you will need to enter the email address for the person verifying your identity.
