Small glimmers of happiness- what are yours?

I'm interested in the little things, maybe seemingly insignificant things that bring joy to your life. Lately I've been thinking about the notion of finding happiness in everyday life to avoid things seeming mundane when I have no big events like holidays coming up. For example- the first page of a new book, growing herbs, a coffee in the garden... What little things bring you joy- I'd love to know, no matter how small.

Watching the birds descend when I throw out some bits on to the grass for them, it's so entertaining! And like a pp, listening to the blackbird at dusk, the sound is unreal. Seeing something grow from seed. The full moon on a clear night, the sunset in late Summer.

Listening to a really good audiobook while doing something boring.

That cup of tea and a sit down after the shopping is put away.

So many more, but life is full of little pleasures that don't cost a penny.

Bedding dried outside, early morning birdsong, blossom on the trees

Woke up this morning to a blackbird singing his heart out in the tree near our window. So put extra birdfeed out for him at breakfast as he'll need to keep his strength up singing like that!

I love blackbirds and the way they put their all into the most beautiful singing.
Gorgeous ceatures.

Magnolia out - pegging out the laundry - a clean greenhouse waiting for tomatoes

Gundogday · 25/03/2025 19:04

Birds tweeting

magnolia tree - took my dog down a certain street today to see a magnificent one

LeaveALittleNote · 25/03/2025 19:07

The first cup of tea in the morning.
Fresh bedding.
Playing with the dogs.
The garden in spring, and a warm and bright spring day.
Sinking into a really hot bath.

Applesandpears23 · 25/03/2025 19:07

Squirty cream.

Watching toddlers who can’t yet jump bending their knees and bobbing up and down whilst other children jump.

Glitchymn1 · 25/03/2025 19:10

Cup of tea first thing on our balcony overlooking a nature reserve. It’s a three storey house so we are elevated, on a hill kind of…. I used to have a large memory foam dog mattress out there for my Lab (elderly). The view is beautiful, the tips of trees and birds swooping.
I’m not such a fan of night time as what I thought were starlings DH lied to me are actually bats- and although I don’t mind them or wish them harm, they give me the creeps a bit.
Our living room looks out over the same view.

shipinfullsail · 25/03/2025 19:31

Sitting outside to have a cup of tea, looking at the green things bursting out in the garden, hearing bees buzzing. Obviously I had a big warm coat on! But it felt so good, after being cooped up indoors for so long.

Istilldontlikeolives · 25/03/2025 19:37

Just being able to get into my bed with a cup of tea to read/watch something/ scroll in peace and quiet is still amazing for me after too many years of noisy neighbours putting me on edge. Also, looking out of the window and feeling the sun on my face or looking at the stars and moon.

DeafLeppard · 25/03/2025 19:39

Those few minutes when my coffee is the perfect drinking temperature.

Inspired by a PP - the toddler squat when they squat down to look at something.

PashaMinaMio · 25/03/2025 19:40

Swimming in the heated outside pool at the club on a chilly totally blue sky day. A light steam rising.
Head is cool, body warm enough, sun blinding as I swim towards it. Bliss.

ChipChippers · 25/03/2025 19:42

The first glass of chilled really good champagne has this effect but the trouble is it is only the first one and then you want more... which is where the glimmer wears off.

Always makes me think of this sketch

When I drive down the hill at Dover and you can see out to the sea. I feel so warm, like sunbeams coming out my face.

i have taken to having my tea out of a nice teapot. It is a silly little thing but gives me a little burst of joy every time. Oh and a nice mug of course. Preferably a Christmas one . Again silly buy I like a bit of Christmas all year round as it is my favourite time of year. Simple pleasures!

Love this! I also have a teapot and enjoy trying unusual flavours of loose leaf tea, at the moment I’ve got chocolate digestive flavour 😋
Could also be that with a cup of something hot, comes the opportunity to stop for a moment and have 5 minutes of calm.

Peace and quiet. No queue at the checkout. My sons telling me their news. A new detective drama series to watch. Watching my cat walking along the top of the fence as he had an operation to repair his knee last year so he was laid up for 6 months and we didn’t know if it had been successful. Something nice for dinner. A text from my sister x

PollyCreo · 25/03/2025 19:47

I had a rare day off today. Had a lie in, lazy morning and coffee in bed. My big lump of a cat joined me for purry cuddles and we sat for ages putting the world to rights. It was bliss 😻

HotCrossBunies · 25/03/2025 19:52

I saw three young hares chasing each other round a stubble field the other day. My glimmers are generally nature related.

orangewasp · 25/03/2025 19:53

Having a cup of tea in bed before starting the day (East facing bedroom so get the sunrise)
Nice soap
Fresh bedding

Mindfulme3456 · 25/03/2025 19:58

WingBingo · 25/03/2025 18:43

@BeaAndBen took me far too long to realise I can have a bit of the “fresh bedding night” joy midweek simply by doing this.

I’m a big believer in finding joy. It’s always the small things.

good coffee, fresh line dried bedding, cycling the long way to work to go by the river.

never saving things for best.

Edited

Totally! Never saving things for best is a great shout- so many times have I saved a fancy bathbomb/ candle/ bottle of fizz/ favourite piece of jewellery etc for that one special occasion which never comes because I can’t decide on when 😂No time like the present!

Rabbits running around the garden.
Birds tweeting in the bright evening.
Flowers and trees budding in spring.

Jumbojem · 25/03/2025 20:03

Watching 5 lambs playing together through a hole in the hedge. They hadn't spotted me and I just loved catching their pure unbridled joy at just "being". Springing up in the air, gently butting each other. Then they spotted me and we all stood in perfect stillness watching each other.
There were also some primroses on the bank to add to the bucolic atmosphere.

TotallyForgettableForNow · 25/03/2025 20:03

A really good cup of English Breakfast Tea.
Birds tweeting away in the trees opposite our fairly new house.
The trees opposite the house!
My bulbs growing well in pots.
Cuddles off my dogs.
Hearing my teenagers have had a good day at school/work.
Spotlessly clean house including fresh, line dried bedding.
A beautiful dusk sky, ideally with the silhouette of trees or pretty houses.
Seeing bats flitting around
Seeing bees on the spring flowers.
Lighting candles in the depths of winter and sitting on the couch with a fluffy blanket.
Christmas.
My wood burner on a cold day.
A nice deep, hot bath with lovely smelling products.
A really good book.
Nice wine!

jellyfishperiwinkle · 25/03/2025 20:05

Nice weather in March. Like just a bit if sun, even it isn't very warm. It's like a gift.

Screwyoutwat · 25/03/2025 20:07

Days off work. I feel like a different person, calm and happy. Nursing after 30 years has taken its toll.
