What did you eat when you were a student?

I’m going back to the ‘80s but my diet was rubbish and I couldn’t cook. I used to eat a lot of toast and a hot meal would be Richmond sausages, smash potato and mushy peas or baked beans. My housemates and I would eat a cheese and tomato oven pizza occasionally. I even liked a pot noodle 🤣

I eat completely differently now but I can’t believe how awful my diet was and I didn’t seem to mind!

I ate a lot of pasta, my diet was mostly pizza and pasta with an occasional veggie curry.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 22/03/2025 17:52

I remember eating a lot of Bird's Eye cod steaks!

90s. Super noodles pimped with cheap ham. Cheese mushroom and ham toasties. Chicken and potatoes fried in a wok. Jacket potatoes and cheese.

A fully nutritous diet 🤣🤣🤣

IsitaHatOrACat · 22/03/2025 17:54

Hardly anything! I weighed about 7 stone

My housemate and I used to share a quorn meal between the two of us!

Mumteedum · 22/03/2025 17:54

I remember Kwik save doing tins of beans for 1p. Everything in our cupboards had black and white labels 😁

JoyousEagle · 22/03/2025 17:54

A lot of pasta, jacket potatoes, and cheese toasties.

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/03/2025 17:55

Pasta with veg and grated cheese, I am not a vegetarian. My BF of the time was doing a PhD and left when writing up and got a job as head of research at his firm so had a decent wage. He used to pick me up from the train station and buy me loads of lamb chop every couple of weeks.

ShowOfHands · 22/03/2025 17:55

Normal food. Used to do a roast most Sundays but otherwise cooked lasagne, cottage pies, pasta dishes, curries and so on. No different to how I eat now really except I don't really eat meat anymore.

BaronessBomburst · 22/03/2025 17:56

Bachelor's savoury mince, which was soya, pot noodles, lots of pasta and potatoes. On Mondays I'd skip dinner and just drink two pints of Beamish at RocSoc instead.

BobbyBiscuits · 22/03/2025 17:57

Pasta that was cooked so much it congealed into a lump covered in off brand pesto, finished with an ongodly amount of low quality mild cheddar.

Spaghetti hoops on margarine laden thick 10p a loaf toast.

That and McDonald's.
And shit loads of booze.

I remember the only things you could get in the college canteen were sausage rolls and chips and wilted sandwiches at airport style prices.

Oh and the kebab van, very occasionally.

Complete shite basically...🤣

SolarSaviour · 22/03/2025 17:57

For myself
Lots of potatoes
Bananas
Fish fingers
Biscuits
Frozen peas
Homemade cheese or jam sandwiches
Homemade carrot cake
Pancakes
Chocolate
Rice pudding
Soup

A treat would be a portion of chips from the chip shop

A pint of cider with friends at pub or club

Simple food, easy & quick to prepare

No meat, no snacks

Sunnytoday01 · 22/03/2025 17:57

I definitely didn’t eat proper dinners like lasagne or cottage pie. I didn’t have the cooking skills and I was permanently broke. I had a boyfriend who liked to make a vegetable curry so that was proper food.

Pasta, pasta and more pasta! I was catered in my first year, though. The food was so gross that we used to follow it with takeaway quite often 😳

Sunnytoday01 · 22/03/2025 17:58

Oh yes chips and gravy from the chip shop which was odd to me not being Northern.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 22/03/2025 17:59

I lived with grandparents so had lots of yummy home cooked meals and desserts!

Zippidydoodah · 22/03/2025 17:59

Cheesy chips at the union! 😋

CMOTDibbler · 22/03/2025 18:00

I was vegetarian as a student and could cook, so had a lot of rice with bean dishes. Vast amounts of pasta with home made tomato sauce and some sort of cooked beans (I'd do a big batch each week of beans in the pressure cooker). Peanut butter sandwiches for lunch every day.
Now DH (not my bf at uni though we knew each other) didn't cook, and ate a lot of tinned sardine toasties using Kwik Save sardines and bread.

BeyondMyWits · 22/03/2025 18:02

TijuanaLady123 · 22/03/2025 18:03

Doner, chips and cheese 3 nights a week after being out. Eat much healthier now thank goodness!

DollopOfFun · 22/03/2025 18:03

Toast. And fags.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 22/03/2025 18:03

Mainly toast and marmite

And vodka

Meadowfinch · 22/03/2025 18:03

Whatever was being sold off cheap at 4pm on a Saturday in Brixton market. 😁. I can still make a very adaptable curry.

There was one summer, the local Safeway had over stocked on corn on the cob. They were selling them for 8p each. I ate a lot of buttered corn that summer. 😀

TijuanaLady123 · 22/03/2025 18:04

Haha yes also fags!

orangewasp · 22/03/2025 18:04

Recipes made with condensed soup. Lots of pasta.
