Has No one Noticed the Link...?

A Million threads on here about the planned cuts to disability benefits

Is no one else slightly concerned about the concurrent discussions about the Assisted Dying Bill? Does this not seem like the beginnings of a dystopian PD James novel?

I haven't seen any other thread mention this but I'm quite concerned about the direction of travel here

And not a single disability rights group does. Not one.

Really?

myplace · 22/03/2025 11:47

Of course there’s a link. Not a conspiracy, paranoia link, but an inevitable link that when people’s circumstances are really bad, life stops being worth living.

Many people live on the edge of feeling life is worthwhile- they fight against their limitations, experience pain/discomfort/embarrassment and find joy where they can. Add poverty to the mix and the balance shifts negatively.

Assisted suicide is an ideal that doesn't work when it meets the messiness of the real world. No government should be trusted with it.

That isn't the same as linking it to the proposed assisted dying bill for England, &Wales, Scotland has their own proposed bill.

Why not? How can it not be a link? People lose the will to live. Handily Government makes it easy for us all to shuffle off.

The risk is the rules being relaxed to include other scenario's. Much like Canada .where homeless people and depressed people have been offered assisted suicide due to lack.of quality of life !
There are already posters saying they hope they are not here much longer because they will be so badly affected. And of course the constant being told you are a drain on the tax payers and being looked down on as feckless wasters is not helping them feel any more optimistic for the future.
I have never seen so much negativity towards disabled adults and children. The press and SM are full of it.
We are in scary times.

Fair. I wasn’t aware of the changes in Canada, which don’t align with my values personally. (Perhaps they do for others, certainly that will be the case in Canada).

I guess it raises an important question - is someone’s desire to die enough for their death to be permitted. And at what point does that start and end being socially acceptable.
Rhetorical question I’m now pondering.
I’ve always considered assisted dying a humane option but my tolerance is to support end of life care, vs the Canadian model you’ve raised.

Can you give us a reference for your suggestion Canada was offering assisted dying to homeless folk?

Towanda12 · 22/03/2025 11:57

OP sounds a bit botty..but happy to be corrected

Towanda12 · 22/03/2025 12:00

So...they havent been 'offered it' but sought it...very different?

But the proposed bill is end of life care the person has to be terminal and within 6 weeks (I think) of death it's hardly dignitas.

Really?

Yes. None of them. And I can see why. It’s a horrifying bill that isn’t being given the proper time for thorough scrutiny.

There's been a lot of news on Canada's Maid euthanasia system which has gone down a very slippery slope.

Apparently 1/4 Canadians now believe that euthanasia is acceptable for social issues such as poverty and homelessness.

A Paralympian was apparently offered euthanasia because she requested disability ramps. An elderly man used in Maid campaigns requested death because of costs of ongoing care needs.

I provided you with information on how lonely and poor people think euthanasia is preferable . Canada is also bringing in state sanctioned death for mental health problems despite a lot of opposition.

If you Google "Canada Maid euthanasia" you'll find a lot of information.

flapjackfairy · 22/03/2025 12:13

guardian article Oct 17 2024.
People were given assisted suicide after requesting it due to poor quality of life and inadequate housing. One lady took it as she couldn't get housing suitable for her disabilities. The say in the article that people requested AD.due to unmet social needs and were granted it.
People thinking we are scaremongering need to wake up .

BeardofHagrid · 22/03/2025 12:19

LBC were saying yesterday the assisted dying bill is on its last legs and won’t make it through parliament.

There’s no link. This isn’t 1984. Stop being so ridiculous.

Towanda12 · 22/03/2025 12:26

Thx, Interesting reading and learning...doesnt alter my view on whether i would want an assisted dying option available to me..but i can see that the hows/whys/wherefores are complex

gamerchick · 22/03/2025 12:27

Coffeeishot · 22/03/2025 11:45

No link at all well maybe in your head! The assisted dying bill is about end of life most disabled people are nowhere near end of life stage

All things start small and sound sensible. The problem is, once it in it can be expanded. It will be expanded.

Towanda12 · 22/03/2025 12:29

My understanding from the articles is that this introduction has been delayed for 3 years (from Mar 23)..in the first instance?

There were lot of threads about assisted dying - MN tend to be pro and not want to hear counter arguments and concerns - but on those people have raised disablities - with RL experinces - as concerns and been shouted down.

I think the it's blatedly come to light with current bill that went though with hand waved oh there will be safe guards has been exposed as fundamenatlly flawed though house commitee meetings. So I'm not sure what the state of that private members bill currently is.

The mission creep effect is a real concern.
