Thread 17 - TalkLair: "Okay, first of all, what's with the outfit? Live in the now, okay? You look like DeBarge."

(Previous thread 16).

Spring is springing, daffodils blooming all over our LairGarden, which have not all been picked by a neighbour's kid...

In the TalkLair, the hearth is glowing, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, cosy rugs are down on the floors looking a bit stained by cat hairball regurgitation. The denizens of the lair are a welcoming bunch though, always eager for general chit-chat on all manner of topics. We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I agree, that if humanity is still around we'll still love dad's army. That show looks wonderful. Great voices!

artant · 27/04/2025 21:50

I’m also up for contributing to your mobility fundraiser @FagsMagsandBags - you deserve the joy that comes from being able to get out and about.

FagsMagsandBags · 28/04/2025 00:37

Thanks, @artant

I should have sent the document to B by now but my new Chromebook wanted me to log in and I wasn't 100% sure of my password. Went in search of my password book and it has been moved. Thankfully realised the error I was making with google log in and that's now sorted but I need to catch up on the document writing. I spent too long today sorting Snoop's birthday card, the birthday card that was going to be but has ended up a framed drawing and then I found a sketch pad and I'm all, wow when you were practising a lot more you were getting quite good. Also thinking. A talking vagina with popcorn for a night at the cinema. That's novel! I also have a good graffiti cartoon. I have vague memories of doing these drawings and I know it's my hand but talk about surprise myself!

I've only skimmed Page 1 so far, but already there is a healthy assortment of the "naice blueberries, fresh salads and hand-pulled artisanal baguettes" crowd - poor OP is Not Being Unreasonable IMO.

Speaking as an organic blueberries/locally-sourced salads/artisanal olives/individually-crafted ethnic baked treasures type of host myself - I just think if anybody is kind enough to invite you and offer food, you damn well eat the food (usual exclusions apply) and be gracious about it.

Offended by friend’s comments about party food | Mumsnet

We hosted my friend, her husband and three kids yesterday afternoon. Our sons are in the same football team and we said we’d put some food on at ours...

I enjoyed that thread, especially the stuff like "I'd expect things like cheese and pineapple..." which made me wonder if I'd fallen into a time-warp and was back in the 60s/70s. And the fact that the moaning minnies went to McDonald's afterwards!

artant · 29/04/2025 12:30

Spectacularly rude guests there! And yes, cheese and pineapple hang really been a thing for several decades. I did once serve it as its retro nature amused me but I opted for fresh pineapple and halloumi cheese both cooked on a griddle pan. That kind of works but only kind of.

FagsMagsandBags · 29/04/2025 12:30

So rude! I'd have been thanking her for a lovely mix of everything and telling the child never to pull faces like that again. And no more invites!

FagsMagsandBags · 29/04/2025 12:32

On my way to the V&A! Hope to tell you stuff later and update you on the funding thing which isn't live yet. Have a lovely day everyone!

Crossbow man has died, not sure how I feel about it. Sad that somebody got so screwed up in the head that he tried to kill others and then turned his despair on himself. Relieved that he'll never be a threat again.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 29/04/2025 17:30

Shame he's died but it could well be better for him that way, he sounded like a very disturbed and unhappy man.

Gonners · 29/04/2025 17:53

I see the Home Office Minister said, in response to people being "concerned" about the use of crossbows in violent attacks: "We share those concerns, and last week the government tabled amendments to the Crime and Policing Bill to strengthen age verification controls on both online sale and delivery of crossbows."

I'm not 100% convinced that stronger "age verification controls" would have made any difference in this case, given that the culprit was 38 years old. But hey, it was something to say I suppose.

moto748e · 29/04/2025 19:37

Yeah, all very Jim Hacker, and 'being seen to do something'.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 29/04/2025 21:22

Yes definite shades of 'Something must be done. This is something.'

Oh bugger. I forgot MN doesn't allow crowfunder links.

Justgiving has a get-careena-mobile page that is @FagsMagsandBags one.

Gonners · 29/04/2025 21:57

OMG, has NoBints mentioned Netmums?

on edit ... Ah, Phew!

How dare you!

(Is Netmums still going? I'd rather assumed it had gone the way of MySpace.)

And JTT?

moto748e · 30/04/2025 13:36

I've just found out what "having a sweep" is (DDiL). Is this a common thing now? I don't remember it back in the day.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 30/04/2025 17:38

"having a sweep"

No idea. What is it?

Gonners · 30/04/2025 17:43

In the pregnancy sense of trying to get labour started, @moto748e? I have (fortunately) never required such a thing, what with being militantly childfree!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/04/2025 17:45

I assume cervical sweep, to encourage labour. Also known as a membrane sweep.

It's not new - it's been used for around 2 centuries.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 30/04/2025 17:55

it's been used for around 2 centuries

I'd never heard of it, shows what I know!

moto748e · 30/04/2025 18:08

A helpful MN thread on the topic said it was "like being fingered by a 14-yr-old"! 😄
But I'd never heard of it.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/04/2025 18:12

Like most things, I expect it's gone in and out of fashion. Fairly standard before an induction these days, I think.
