Frozen mash, is it really unhealthy?

I ate at a friend's and she used frozen mash. I was very impressed, lovely and no lumps
It is so convenient. According to the packet it only has potato and butter in it but am I kidding myself?
I guess it is considered UPF but how unhealthy is it?

If the only ingredients really are potato and butter it can’t be UPF. It’s no unhealthier than home made mashed potato.

QuestionableMouse · 21/03/2025 18:54

No. It's potato and butter. It's fine.

nahthatsnotforme · 21/03/2025 18:54

Prue Leith was using it the other day.. her view was it’s just potato and butter and life is too short for making mash. Can’t really argue with that.

MintTwirl · 21/03/2025 18:56

Interesting, if it is just potato and butter then I might start buying it, I hate making mash.

AlisonDonut · 21/03/2025 18:56

It's fine I'd imagine. I buy chilled mash if I'm in an Airbnb and need to make a quick meal.

BucketFacer · 21/03/2025 18:56

It's likely to be healthier than freshly made stuff, as the freezing of the starch before eating reduced its glycemic index and has a lower impact on your blood sugars as a result.

FidosMum84 · 21/03/2025 18:59

Does it matter, it’s delicious! Really easy to microwave and tastes better than the fresh supermarket mash with less plastic packaging. I truly hate peeling spuds and this solves the problem.

sorechalfonts · 21/03/2025 19:00

I find the frozen mash tastes much nicer than the chilled, which always has a weird ‘kept’ taste to me as if it’s not really fresh. The Tesco and sainsburys frozen mash are really nice.

SassiestPants · 21/03/2025 19:00

It's really just potatoes and butter. I use it sometimes, really handy to have in the freezer.

sorechalfonts · 21/03/2025 19:03

You can put the frozen ‘pellets’ on top on cottage pies etc as well.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/03/2025 19:04

It's only unhealthy if it is frozen solid and you are whacked over the head with it.

Well, in my experience, anyway.

Snorlaxo · 21/03/2025 19:08

The only reason I’d avoid is if I had a dairy allergy.

It’s not UPF and a massive time saver.

TheOliveFinch · 21/03/2025 19:25

I think frozen mash is great and have tried lots of different ones , looks like potato tampons out of the packet

JasmineAllen · 21/03/2025 19:25

As long as its just potato and no UPF then allowing carbs to cool and then reheat them is good for you because it converts to resistant carbohydrates. Resistant carbs not only don't spike your blood sugar as much as non resistant carbs but they also feeds good bacteria in your bowel.

This works for not only potato but pasta and rice too 🙂

Davros · 21/03/2025 19:44

I can’t eat it sadly because I am on a regime which means no (or low) previously cooked and reheated or reconstituted starch. It can give me severe stomach pains. No frozen sliced bread, no microwave rice, no dried pasta. Also low fibre so no baked beans 😢, sprouts 😭, pulses etc

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 21/03/2025 19:50

Thanks. Frozen mash it is

Seriously you are buying and using frozen mashed potatoes?
Really?
You must have more money than sense imo!

Blarn · 21/03/2025 20:03

I love my mash but despite several different mashers and two ricers, I cannot get it lump free. I like it 'rustic' as I call it, dh stopped caring years ago but dd2 hates it (dd1 unfortunately just hates mash). So I found frozen mash has just potatoes and butter, I assume some industrial mashed potatoes frozen into chunks. I add a bit more butter and a splash of milk, sometimes mustard. Everyone is happy and I never feel guilty. It is useful as dd2 can sometimes have a little bowl of mash and baked beans for lunch.

It is expensive but I work full time ,dh works long hours and we can afford to make dinner time easier sometimes.

nokidshere · 21/03/2025 20:08

When I make mash I always use the whole bag of potatoes 2.5kg and then freeze some portions. I haven’t used shop bought but frozen mash is always better than fresh anyway.

sorechalfonts · 21/03/2025 20:12

The Cathedral City frozen mash from Iceland is delicious .

sorechalfonts · 21/03/2025 20:14

With the price of actual potatoes plus electricity for boiling I wonder what the price difference really is?

We live in France and the chilled mash is bloody lovely.

SnivellingEd · 21/03/2025 20:16

I doubt there’s just potatoes and butter in frozen mash. Food labelling has lots of things slipping under the radar. Read up on it. Of course it’s processed.

Frozen mash is really cheap! And microwaving is much cheaper than boiling no?

And I buy frozen diced onion, frozen cubed butternut squash, frozen fruit and >gasp< frozen baked potatoes.
