Frozen mash, is it really unhealthy?

I ate at a friend's and she used frozen mash. I was very impressed, lovely and no lumps
It is so convenient. According to the packet it only has potato and butter in it but am I kidding myself?
I guess it is considered UPF but how unhealthy is it?

I love frozen mash. Its just potato. I get mashed carrot and sweed too and mix it together, makes a very tasty root veg mash.

Moier · 21/03/2025 22:04

I've been using it scince forever.. Sainsburys is the best in my opinion.. my hands won't peel potatoes.. it's one of the best things scince sliced bread

Lovemycat2023 · 21/03/2025 22:05

I freeze my own mash too. It’s easy to make extra when you’re making a batch and it heats up very quickly in microwave. Given that no reason the ready-made stuff has anything extra in it.

Hopping on here to ask how to cook frozen mash without a microwave?

I tip the bag into a baking tray and put it in the oven. One ifbiur favourite meals is a tray of baked mash, a tray of good baked sausages, a tray of baked veg and some onion gravy.

If I make shepherd's pie I put the meat in a baking tray and tip a bag of frozen mash over the top.

I’m low UPF’s and buy organic etc and I always buy frozen mash! It’s just potato, butter & seasoning. I don’t have time in my life to boil & mash!

As long as its just potato and no UPF then allowing carbs to cool and then reheat them is good for you because it converts to resistant carbohydrates. Resistant carbs not only don't spike your blood sugar as much as non resistant carbs but they also feeds good bacteria in your bowel.

This works for not only potato but pasta and rice too 🙂

Works on toast too.
Let it cool, then give a quick blast of heat if you prefer it hot. Much better for you.

Don’t you remember the horse meat lasagna scandal?

I think you’re being a bit dim. There are laws but there are also loopholes!

You think horsemeat was a loophole? Oh sweet summer child! 🤣🤣🤣

FluffyGreat · 21/03/2025 22:20

I would say it’s definitely processed and probably is a UPFood.

If it’s just butter and a little salt, it’s minimally processed, but anything else, ultra processed.

happygertie · 21/03/2025 22:21

We love the Morrisons one, never make it fresh anymore.

ijustneedaminute24 · 21/03/2025 22:23

Frozen mash is a greater invention than sliced bread IMO.

DD won’t eat my homemade mash any more as it’s “too lumpy” no matter how much I mash it. I’m not sad about it, I’ve not got the time to be peeling, chopping and boiling potatoes when for £1 I can buy a bag from Aldi and it be done in 4 minutes. Plus I can do a small portion and not waste anything. .

same goes for veg. With the exception of broccoli and baby corn, it’s all frozen.

I agree with you about the mash. But have you tried boiling potatoes with the skin on?
They will be bursting out of their skins after boiling and much easier to peel.

Seriously you are buying and using frozen mashed potatoes?
Really?
You must have more money than sense imo!

@Mum2jenny

i do. Lots of people do. I can’t be arsed peeling, boiling and mashing potatoes. I’d rather be doing something else.

Renamed · 21/03/2025 22:26

For it to be UPF it would need to include stabilisers, gums etc or processed in a way you couldn’t do at home.

LuckySantangelo35 · 21/03/2025 22:29

I’ve never seen frozen mash before. Just the chilled stuff. Does it come in a bag? How do you separate it out? Doesn’t it all amalgamate into one big hard frozen lump?

It’s not actually that expensive, infact it can be fairly cheap.
And can be less wasteful when cooking for just one or two people.
it’s also fast, which is handy if you are pushed for time but want a relatively healthy meal after work/school.

It’s generally frozen in cubes or pellets. There are serving suggestions for how many you need per person.
It doesn’t become just one big lump.

I particularly like the way it can make roast potatoes feel like a healthy option if you par boil them the day before and store them in the fridge overnight 😂

Thank you. I will have a look next time im
shopping. I imagine it would be handy to have in the freezer

Wittow · 21/03/2025 22:53

The "Delia cheats" cookbook uses Aunt Bessie's frozen mash directly on top of tinned M&S mince to make cottage pie!

Might give this a go now I've seen frozen mash has the mumsnet seal of approval!

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 21/03/2025 23:54

I bought some frozen swede and carrot mash the other day and was pleasantly surprised to see it was just the veg with salt, pepper and butter.

treacledan71 · 22/03/2025 04:22

I love it. Makes life so much easier especially if making a cottage pie. It's more expensive than it used to be but less washing up.

PersonalBest · 22/03/2025 05:52

I'm Irish and we like our mash fluffy, or at least I do. I wonder would I find it too smooth? Guess there's only way to find out!

greengreyblue · 22/03/2025 05:57

Freezing food doesn’t make it unhealthy .The one I use occasionally is just potato, butter and salt.I first bought it after seeing chef use it on This Morning. Phil Vickery I think. He said he uses it often .

It’s not expensive. I buy from Aldi. Hardly ever use it but it’s a standby if making a fish pit for example.

Another vote here for frozen mash

Once you've tried it you like it!
