Idiots guide to water meters

Any information appreciated.

We're with Thames Water and due to have one fitted.

Do you read it like your gas / electricity meters?

Or does it show your consumption like a smart meter?

I saw on another thread that they (Thames Water) come out to read the meter once a year? Is this to check its accurate?

How are the bills calculated?

Probably should have asked all this when booking the appointment to fit but I was about to go into a work meeting so pushed for time. They are coming on Monday!!

Mine isn’t a smart meter. Someone comes to read it twice a year and they calculate what I owe from the reading. It’s in the pavement at the bottom of the drive so no need for anyone to come in the house.

This
We found that it was cheaper than water rates

Oh right. Thank you.

So how do they work out my monthly rate then? Surely they won't be reading it for a good while so do I carry on paying the current rate?

(Whole reason I'm moving is because my monthly dd has gone up by 33%!)

We are with Anglian Water and ours is a Smart Meter, I can see hourly amounts online so I can tell when I did the washing or DH was over zealous with the hosepipe, also I can tell if there is a leak as no water is used at night unless someone goes to the loo. I have never had to read the meter. If it's a smart meter you can have a look at your usage to see if it looks the right amount you are paying
