Do you say anything if a colleague or friend changes their hair

And does it make a difference if you dont like it or think it doesn't suit them?

Recently changed my hair if you haven't already guessed!

Well I hadn't seen my neighbour for some weeks and when I saw her in her garden I think I said something along the lines of : "oh I didn't recognise you with your new hair style". Which was actually true because it was a totally different colour, as well as shorter. And she proceeded to give me chapter and verse on her hair and why she'd had done what was done. I made approving noises and didn't mention the fact I preferred it before the make over.
So for me I probably would say something diplomatically but I'm not totally convinced I'm in the right here.
I think it depends on how well you know the person as well. A friend might feel upset if a comment wasn't made.

I like to pay more general compliments, and let people ascribe it to a change if they like.

saying looking lovely, but then you always do sounds fine to me.

Saying great hair when it’s different does sound to me very much as if you thought it was not so good before.

Maybe just me.

I always compliment someone on their hair if I see they have had it cut, coloured or whatever - whether I personally like it or not.

Nothing worse than changing your hair & no one saying anything, makes you feel like crap. And it doesn't cost anything to boost someone's self esteem.

Yeah, if I notice and I know I'm not going to sound insincere then I'll tell them it looks nice.

ExtraDecluttering · 21/03/2025 17:13

Unless it's fairly drastic I don't tend to notice. I sit between two other women at work and I usually arrive second, have a bit of a chat with first and then third one starts a bit later. I often hear hear third say "had your hair done?" to first and realise I hadn't noticed. Assuming it's drastic enough to notice it would depend how much I like them and to some extent how good it looks. I'm not good at pretending I like something if I don't and worry about sounding insincere.

snafflezoom · 21/03/2025 17:20

Same as Orange if I noticed I would say it looked great no matter what I personally thought because if it is a big enough change to be noticed then the person might be feeling self conscious of it and I am all about boosting women's feelings for the good.

Tarantella6 · 21/03/2025 17:21

Nope because I'm immediately paranoid they did it weeks earlier and I didn't notice!
