Should I cancel Disneyworld trip due to all the politics?!

With all the politics ongoing rn I’m not sure if to cancel a trip to DW we had planned in the summer.

I already paid for the tickets but accommodation and flights can be cancelled losing a small deposit. Really worried as I am brown with mixed race dc with my white dh. all these politics have us seriously scared to visit. Are we being ridiculous.

No, unless you want to boycott out of principle but that seems an extreme response when you’ve already booked. Honestly you’ll have a wonderful time! There are millions of mixed race families In the US. The majority of US citizens are just getting on with their lives and doing their best to switch off from all the drama.

Pinkvelvetcake · 21/03/2025 13:41

If I was a US citizen I wouldn’t be worried but the U.K. home office has updated their advice recently for travel to US and it’s made me worry that it’s not a good idea rn.

I’m sure your kids will really appreciate their trip to Disney being cancelled.

The scaremongering on here is absolutely ridiculous.

I am an American. You will be perfectly safe at Disney or anywhere else in the country. There are families here of all races and blended races just going about their daily lives. You will just be part of the crowd.

RaspberryRipple2 · 21/03/2025 13:55

In what way has advice changed? Pretty sure it hasn’t - it’s very unlikely this would actually change unless there was widespread civil unrest (noting there was relatively widespread civil unrest around the UK for a few days last summer…). The USA is an extremely diverse country (more diverse than ours and most of Western Europe), including Florida, you won’t attract a second glance at Disney world, a large proportion of employees and visitors are not white.

Pinkvelvetcake · 21/03/2025 14:02

Thank you I appreciate the replies, my main fear is something happening at the airport Tbh rather than in the US.
. But it looks like my fears are not reasonable.

It's the USA not North Korea!!! Stop being so dramatic.

It has changed. The advice from both uk and German governments has changed to warn people to check visas and to thoroughly check us entry requirement in light of recent detentions of foreign nationals and refusals of entry.

Pinkvelvetcake · 21/03/2025 15:27

@Horriblevirusagain if the home office changes its advice, I’m concerned, I imagine they’ve changed the advice for a reason. I’m glad to see it would appear I am fearful for no reason though.

Hi, I’m a travel agent. Advice changes all the time as countries change rules to entry. When the EU visa eventually comes it then advice will change to all EU destinations too. A change in advice, unless it’s changed to ‘advise against all travel’ is exactly that, a change in advice.
Another example would be the Maldives travel advice changing last November as you can no longer take a vape to the Maldives, it’s a change in advice, or against travel.

AGet yourself there, it is AMAZING

Sunnydays25 · 21/03/2025 15:34

The problem is that Trump and his mob have emboldened racists, so you could come in for abuse in public areas if you're in the wrong area.

Never been to Disney so I don't know if they police the behaviour of guests at the parks re abusive remarks.

lifesrichpageant · 21/03/2025 15:36

OP I personally would cancel out of principle but not out of safety. You and your family should be safe at Disneyworld.

CulturalNomad · 21/03/2025 15:44

If it helps, the racial makeup of Florida is 51% White and 49% Non-White. With a population of 23,000,000 it is a very diverse place!

Radiatorvalves · 21/03/2025 15:46

I would reluctantly go if I had tickets booked, but don’t intend to be going near America for the next 4 years. I’m sure you’ll be fine OP, but double check all your visa/passports. And I’d avoid posting anything related to American politics under your name. May be OTT but I’ve read about people’s phones being checked at airports. Whether it’s hyperbole I don’t know. But that man has no respect for the law.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 21/03/2025 15:48

To be honest, I wouldn't book a holiday to the US right now, and probably won't until the Orange one is out and things seem a bit more stable.

I wouldn't be cancelling an already booked holiday though, especially if I'd lose money over it.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 21/03/2025 15:51

If it's just saying to check visas. That's sensible advice for going anywhere.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 21/03/2025 15:53

I guess it depends on what would ruin your holiday. I think you’re probably okay from something massively horrendous (shootings/police brutality) happening, but the casual racism is ramping up. DS is mixed and we were in Disney a few months ago - it was the first time we’ve had open comments in the US about his skin tone/snide comments (‘just push past the brown kid, he’s probably illegal and doesn’t understand the rules 🤨’ - when perfectly entitled to be there 😬) - I’ve noticed this on work trips too (I was in another part of the US more recently) but as I’m white it doesn’t scare me as much as when trying to defend a small child!

DenholmElliot11 · 21/03/2025 15:55

I don't think I'd risk it, sorry, probably not what you want to hear.

YourBestFriend · 21/03/2025 15:59

If you end up going, trying to speak really soft so people don't hear your accent or else they could bash you really bad. The racism is rampant at the moment.

Parrotscoop · 21/03/2025 15:59

It's not true that black people are "perfectly safe" in US though and the current leadership is making that worse.

I understand why OP is concerned.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 21/03/2025 16:00

I think the OP is more worried about the airport not Florida I’m presuming, feel the same and debating cancelling mine

Berlinlover · 21/03/2025 16:00

You would be absolutely insane to cancel your trip. Sometimes I just despair at the nonsense I read on here.

PickAChew · 21/03/2025 16:01

You main concerns would be if you had visited somewhere the Trump administration doesn't like or posted critically of them on social media. The rules in the warning that you're expected to comply with include sharing IDs and passwords, if asked.

FKAT · 21/03/2025 16:02

As a PP said, Florida is very diverse state. Miami is essentially a Spanish speaking city. Orlando / DW less so but still very multicultural / multiracial. You will not stand out in any way. Disney protect their brand, look after their customers and are anti-Trump.

Bloody hell, that's so awful! 😥I'm really sorry you and DS had to deal with that.

I also understand the OP's concerns.
