Should I cancel Disneyworld trip due to all the politics?!

With all the politics ongoing rn I’m not sure if to cancel a trip to DW we had planned in the summer.

I already paid for the tickets but accommodation and flights can be cancelled losing a small deposit. Really worried as I am brown with mixed race dc with my white dh. all these politics have us seriously scared to visit. Are we being ridiculous.

Your are not alone in your concerns - see Sarfraz Manzoor 's post on Insta.

I'll try to find the thread on MN about going to the US for a spouse's work and several posters said don't go if you're not white. I didn't see anyone challenge that racism whereas I see it denied on other threads.

honeylulu · 21/03/2025 16:15

Please don't cancel. Disneyworld is a bubble, it's nothing like America in general and visitors are from all over the world (as well as lots of Americans).

I get what posters are saying about cancelling out of principle but you will lose (some) money and it's hassle to arrange and then sort another holiday. I would go ahead and then boycott the US in future years.

Azureshores · 21/03/2025 16:17

Yes I think you're being ridiculous.

What makes you think you wouldn't be welcome as a mixed race person? Around 59% of America is white so you won't exactly be the only person with darker skin.

If I was a US citizen I wouldn’t be worried but the U.K. home office has updated their advice recently for travel to US and it’s made me worry that it’s not a good idea rn.

What is the recommendation and what are the politics you re worried about? Why France in particular? I'm asking not to be facetious but not sure why going to Disneyland whole be a problem.

GardenOrField · 21/03/2025 16:54

I see I should have read your post properly you mean going to actual Disneyland. If course yous could go, you will be fine. Still, what are these travel updates?

AcrossthePond55 · 21/03/2025 17:01

I'm in the US. Recently a French scientist was denied entry for (alleged) anti-Trump postings. There have been a few incidents of tourists being detained at 'land crossings' borders because their visas weren't 'just so'.

I wouldn't worry about racial abuse. Mixed race families are pretty par for the course on both the East and West Coasts.

But what I would be concerned about is being refused entry or being detained by ICE. So I would double check your visas/ESTAs to be sure everything is according to Hoyle and there are no 'questionable' answers. And also check on the whole family's social media and 'scrub' anything that could be considered anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, anti-Musk or anti-'America is the best place in the world'. I'm not saying anything like that is going to happen and chances are a 'happy family on the way to Disney' won't attract the 'wrong kind' of attention from ICE. Just that these days you just don't know what 'that man' will decide to be insulted by next.

This. I would delete all social media apps on your phone to be on the safe side.

waitingquietly · 21/03/2025 17:09

You are right that the advice has changed . To me it looks like you just need to be hyper vigilant that all your Visas and other paperwork are in order .

i personally do understand your worries . We were planning a US trip next year for a big birthday but will probably now go elsewhere . That said I probably wouldn’t cancel a booked and partly paid for trip

WinterMorn · 21/03/2025 17:09

Radiatorvalves · 21/03/2025 15:46

I would reluctantly go if I had tickets booked, but don’t intend to be going near America for the next 4 years. I’m sure you’ll be fine OP, but double check all your visa/passports. And I’d avoid posting anything related to American politics under your name. May be OTT but I’ve read about people’s phones being checked at airports. Whether it’s hyperbole I don’t know. But that man has no respect for the law.

We had a US trip booked for summer, but we are going to be transferring our deposit money to a different trip. Not only will I take a stand by not supporting the US tourist industry, if my phone got checked at the border I wouldn’t be getting in as I have been openly critical about the Trump administration.

@Horriblevirusagain if the home office changes its advice, I’m concerned, I imagine they’ve changed the advice for a reason. I’m glad to see it would appear I am fearful for no reason though.

What have they changed it from/to?

FKAT · 21/03/2025 17:48

There's a dispute about what the French scientist was expelled for - Homeland Security says it wasn't for social media posts but confidential information breach. World of difference between a French scientist attending a conference on a non-ESTA visa and a family visiting Disneyland as tourists.

Homeland Security has been tough for years. You can't piss about with paperwork. My friend (a PR person) was denied entry to US in the Obama administration for coming in on a visa waiver rather than visa and put back on the plane. Since 9/11 and even before immigration is very rigid. This is not news.

menopausalfart · 21/03/2025 17:53

We're a mixed family. If you're staying in Disney, you'll be in the bubble. Are you staying off-site?

SnivellingLittleDerogatoryName · 21/03/2025 17:59

Sunnydays25 · 21/03/2025 15:34

The problem is that Trump and his mob have emboldened racists, so you could come in for abuse in public areas if you're in the wrong area.

Never been to Disney so I don't know if they police the behaviour of guests at the parks re abusive remarks.

What a load of rubbish. Trump has received the highest amount of Black support for a Republican in decades as well as the gains from Latino voters. OP is not going to come in for more abuse in public areas. How ridiculous!

NotAPersonalAttack · 21/03/2025 18:16

Black and Latino people can be racist towards South Asian people (which I'm guessing the OP is) as well as white people.

Radiatorvalves · 21/03/2025 18:22

Further to what I wrote above my DS was due to be studying in the US later this year. I wasn’t thrilled about it and very conflicted as we would want to visit him. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was when he found out he’d be going to Canada. The relief on many different fronts.

About half of Americans voted for that man and that disturbs me as much as the man himself. What are their values? Different I think from mine.

i was talking to a friend who was in Florida recently and she found it pretty strange and won’t be returning any time soon. And incredibly expensive. I was shocked at prices on our last visit 2 years ago.

But in your shoes I would probs still go.

I can’t see where OP has said she is South Asian . However yes of course people can be racist to others whatever colour they are. I was calling out the poster who said that “Trump and his mob” - the democratically elected administration presumably - have emboldened racists.

FairKoala · 06/04/2025 10:28

Just make sure you haven’t posted anything negative about the orange one on SM.
😂

FairKoala · 06/04/2025 10:35

Just remember that country that consists of a predominantly immigrant population whooped and cheered when Donald said he was going to deport all immigrants.

So not the illegal kind of immigrant, not the criminal kind of immigrant. But all immigrants.
Presumably the native Americans are having their land returned to them then?

Boredlass · 06/04/2025 10:47

Some of the replies on here is madness.

Pinkvelvetcake · 17/04/2025 10:48

I’m still deciding on this. Things seem to have gotten worse since I first questioned cancelling, are people still thinking I’m overreacting? I know DW is a bubble etc I was hoping to visit other areas such as the space centre. Don’t know how it will be driving about either, such a shame to have to be worried in this day and age!

OP posts:
Sammysquiz · 17/04/2025 14:37

What do you mean though by “all the politics”, and when you say things have “gotten worse” what specific things are you referring to in relation to travel? I think if you could identify your specific fears we might be able to alleviate them.

LuluDelulu · 17/04/2025 16:55

Florida is a very diverse state. You’ll be fine.

This. My son has lived in the US for 15 years, and all is normal for tourism.

Just, as ever, make sure your visa, `ESTAs , and passports are in order.

What have they changed it from/to?

its not a clear level change like some countries (eg it has changed to all but essential travel) but an addition/change of information in a section - at the top it tells you what has changed and when. Othere countries have a more standardised security level - so its interesting to cross ref ie https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/americas/united-states-america
