With all the politics ongoing rn I’m not sure if to cancel a trip to DW we had planned in the summer.

I already paid for the tickets but accommodation and flights can be cancelled losing a small deposit. Really worried as I am brown with mixed race dc with my white dh. all these politics have us seriously scared to visit. Are we being ridiculous.

I work in security and risk management and if you were my sister travelling, I would advise you to:

  1. be aware of the political tensions and avoid political discussions
  2. ensure all your paperwork and documents are in order including visas, driving licence (if you are hiring a car), tickets
  3. understand which documents you need to carry with you
  4. understand that local laws are different and you should be aware of what is allowed including prescription medication or other goods you are bringing into the country
  5. be mentally prepared for additional scrutiny at the airport and that you or your partner may be questioned (away from your family) about your purpose of entering the USA, your plans, your resources etc
  6. be prepared to surrender your electronics - I would advise travel with a clean PAYG phone
  7. have a written list of core emergency contact numbers in case your phone is confiscated
  8. Be prepared for increased racist remarks and behaviour

None of this is extreme or over the top, rather it's about ensuring you minimise any encounter with law enforcement or immigration and have a smooth entry and exit.

But you can do all the right things in life and if someone hateful wants to pick on you, they can, especially if they have the power to do so.

I'd ask people who look like you or have a name like yours for their thoughts. IRL or online. Because if they haven't experienced, for example, being told to, "go back to where you came from", when you are walking down the street minding your own business, it's easy to say your concerns are ridiculous.

Years ago, I forgot to take a belt off when I went through security and it beeped so I offered to go through again without the belt and security refused and were then horrid to me. My travelling companion made me feel like it was my fault but I'm human and I forgot and didn't deserve to be treated like that.

Having said all that, I'd probably still go if I'd booked tickets and just hope I don't get hassle. But if I hadn't booked, I'd choose somewhere else.

I’d go but def not plan any more trips for the forseeable

i think you’ll be fine. I just personally wouldn’t want any of my money going to that country at the moment. But if I’d already paid for a big chunk of it, I’d carry on
