Getting a new phone - android

KingKitty · 21/03/2025 10:48

I have an android phone. I think it's a redmi. Bought it nearly 2 years ago. It's still working well. However I keep getting notifications about space. Over the past few months I sat down and cleared pictures and files and apps that I don't use. I am still getting these notifications. It's a 128 GB phone.

Anyways I am really thinking about sizing up and getting an android phone with 256gb.

Has anyone else done similar and any recommendations for an android with a large GB and preferably a budget phone. As in I will never spend hundreds and hundreds on a phone that would nearly be a grand.

I think 300/400 euro is the max I would spend.

Any help

Thanks

128gb is a pretty decent amount of storage. Have you cleared the cache of your apps? I can't imagine filling that amount of memory on a phone and I have many large memory apps, like banking apps, Facebook and Instagram. Also look into storing photos/videos in the cloud if you have a lot.

If you post exactly what phone you have, we may be able to make some suggestions about getting more storage.

Yes, I cleared the cache too.

I am not allowed that tech savvy to be honest. I have picture and video gallery app and Google photos but I prefer the gallery. There probably isn't any need to have the two different apps for the pictures and videos. It's something I need to ponder about.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

The Redmi Note 11 will take a micro SD card which expands the storage up to 1Tb. So no need for a new phone. You can get the cards on Amazon, the price varies according to the storage capacity but you could double your current capacity for around a tenner.

There are instructions on how to fit it here https://deviceguides.vodafone.co.uk/xiaomi/redmi-note-11-android-11-0/getting-started/insert-memory-card/

You will need to move some apps on to the SD card when it's fitted, but that's a straightforward one off job that there will be plenty of YouTube videos for, or someone a bit more techy might be happy to do for you.

The memory card gives you additional space for saving apps, music, videos clips etc.

Oh I never realised. My phone is slowing down a lot now too and crashing easily. My screen has some bumps and chips so at this stage I think I was looking for a new phone anyways.

are your photos and videos backing up to the cloud? If so make sure you select the auto delete option, then when you take a photo/video, it will back up to the cloud and then delete it off your phone. If you dont have a cloud option set up, then look at Google

The other thing to look at is if you have lots of music saved to your phone, or downloaded pdfs and other documents

Yes, I would have a lot of downloaded pdfs.

I only have Spotify.

About pictures - making a change will be a huge step. I currently use a gallery app that I am used to. I have Google too and I now realise I have space issues and only one picture app will likely have to do me.

I would nearly prefer to buy a bigger phone.

There was a day a few weeks ago where I went through the screenshot app and deleted over a 1000 that I just didn't need.

fair enough on getting a new phone, but maybe set it up with auto back up and delete for photos and videos so you dont end up right back here in a year!
