What a lovely plan - enjoy! We did Venice with our three when they were tiny and just went back last month when they’re all in their twenties. We had an absolutely fantastic time.

Ihavetotellsomeone · 19/03/2025 16:07

Thank you, I’ve been searching and searching for ages
now we can get excited
and think about the food etc we want to have

Never been to South of france in my life, my kids and husband haven't even been to France, from the photos I've seen tho the sea color looks amazing, like gatorade! So turquoise blue and bright

Wonder if I should try the frogs legs?pretty sure the kids won't!

Apparently they taste like chicken, Op!

I hope you have a fantastic time, your trip sounds perfect!

unsync · 19/03/2025 17:02

@Utterlyexhausted Frogs legs are indeed rather similar in taste to chicken.

The bay at Nice is so blue I have it as the wallpaper on my phone. We loved the south of France, went last year and used the trains to visit the resorts on either side of Nice, including Cannes. The trains are super efficient and if you are flying into Nice the centre is only a short tram ride away. We will return!
Have a fab holiday.

Ihavetotellsomeone · 19/03/2025 17:30

Oh I’ll give them a try then
as maybe I’ll never go there again
i fancy trying the pastries and filet of beef too

Where did you stay ? I’m thinking of biking accommodation in Cannes for the sandy beach, have that as a base
but it would be cheaper to stay in nice then visit these places on the train
but I’m swinging towards Cannes for the beach

The beach in Nice is lovely but I'm not a beach person to be honest. What we liked about Nice was there's a lot going on and it's in the middle of other resorts to the east and west on the train line. We stayed in an Airbnb right in the middle with trams outside and supermarkets a minutes walk away but as it was at the rear of the building it was totally peaceful. Unfortunately it no longer appears to be available.

For a great choice of restaurants (Cannes) in a gorgeous narrow pedestrian street full of atmosphere and a bit away from the swanky stuff down on the Croisette (still a bit pricy here too but not as bad!) have a look at Rue du Suquet on google maps. The road leads up to the church and it is just great around there with restaurants galore.

One row back from the seafront is Rue Meynadier. Again have a look. It's where the locals go to shop, plenty of patisseries, boucheries, boulangeries, delis, clothes, curtains, pharmacies with loads of French goodies, and much much more. Great for a stroll up and down.

And if you are lucky enough to be in Cannes on market day - you can check - a visit to the Marche Forville is an absolute must. Massive, indoors and every type of food you ever (or never) heard of is there. Try the cafes/bistros outside, great food and it's where the locals and market traders go so it's really good, and very inexpensive. You will love the busy noisy atmosphere.

Are you taking the train from Nice to Italy or driving across?

Have a look at Treviso as well, lovely little town and a short train ride from Venice (ie you can easily do day trips). It has old city walls you can partially walk round and some very nice restaurants, all very authentic feeling, Considerably cheaper, too!
