Easter music

I always find the changing seasons call for particular music so I’m after any music that says “Easter” to you, could be religious but doesn’t have to be.

So far I always like to listen to Pie Jesu and Panis Angelicus and also the album “We Walked In Song” by the American band The Innocence Mission.

anyone else?

Easter parade.

Jesus Christ superstar musical

Cavalier rusticana... Spelling

Allegri’s Miserere me Deus. The reproaches. Psalm 118, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Now the green blade riseth, walking in the garden. Stay with me. Ps. Pie Jesu isn’t Easter music, it’s from the requiem mass.

We sing this a LOT in Orthodox Church at our Easter (Pascha). We sing it in English, Greek and Church Slavonic.

Rimsky-Korsakov Russian Easter Overture. I don't allow myself to listen at any time of the year except Easter, otherwise I would listen to it every day. It is SO uplifting.

Ditto all. Cavalleria (I think) Rusticana, well, the Easter Hymn certainly. I guess quite a lot of people would say they don't know it because they don't know operas, UNTIL they hear it, and say, "Oh, yeah, I've heard that tune before."

Parts of of Handel’s Messiah.

Lansonmaid · 18/03/2025 20:55

Part 2 of Handel’s Messiah. Bach St Matthew Passion. Ave Verum Corpus by William Byrd.
Stabat Mater by Pergolesi (preferably sung by James Bowman and Emma Kirkby….). And the hymn 40 days and 40 nights that we always sing at the beginning of Lent

Peachbubble · 18/03/2025 20:59

Thine be the Glory is one of my favourite (Easter) hymns

PurBal · 18/03/2025 21:01

I mean, anything with Alleluia / Hallelujah in… but even writing that during Lent gives me chills.

lavenderlou · 18/03/2025 21:04

At my church they always play Lord of the Dance at the Good Friday service.

My previous Parish priest would never say it. But I’ve just been chatting to a bishop friend about music for the Easter vigil and he didn’t seem to have an issue with it. I wondered if he would skirt around it. Apparently not.

Forgot to add my absolute favourite is O Fille Et Fillae in English or Latin.

Were you there, been recorded by many but the best version in my opinion features my daughter Grin

alligri misere is good too

Thanks all! Will enjoy looking up all your recommendations. Yes Pie Jesus isn’t - but it feels Eastery to me? Silly I know!

All in an Easter garden, before the break of day, and Angel came for Jesus and rolled the stone away…

As PPs have said, the Hallelujah chorus of Handel’s Messiah

Toddlerteaplease · 25/03/2025 01:51

@Bernadinettathat sounds very similar to ‘walking in a garden’ the words are beautiful.
