Admittedly at 55 years old I am ancient, but I just don't get this thing where girls mime to a song, bobbing their heads on camera, pouting... Isn't being seen doing that excruciatingly embarrassing?? This is a genuine plea, I want to understand what this is all about. Can anyone explain please?

Just get rid of TikTok it’s literally of no benefit to anyone. Best thing I ever did was get rid of that type of social media.

festivemouse · 18/03/2025 10:19

It’s just fun videos? Normally to popular music, dancing along or singing along to lyrics they like?

biscuitsandbooks · 18/03/2025 10:20

It’s just a daft trend. I’m sure we all did equally embarrassing things when we were teens!

BearPear · 18/03/2025 10:24

I love TikTok and I’m a little older than you! The more stuff you watch, or scroll past the more the algorithm “learns” what you like. I mainly get silly animals, baby things (I’m a new grandma) sewing (my hobby) and some feminist rage stuff - all very entertaining, chewing gum for the eyes, if you will.
You’re describing someone like Bella Poach and while she’s very pretty I agree that I don’t get it either (I think some of it is weird anime-style fetish-adjacent, but that could just be the cynic in me). Scroll past the stuff that doesn’t interest you and you will end up with a more curated FYP

Can I also ask why teens use their real names and revealing their school by wearing their uniform? I find this so odd. Don’t they understand the implications of what they’re doing? I’ve seen some students from top performing Indy schools do this. Aren’t their parents and school aware?

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 18/03/2025 10:27

This is just the new generation of cringey things teens do, since the dawn of time the generation who came before have questioned why teens are now doing X Y or Z.

Chuchoter · 18/03/2025 10:27

You forgot that stupid dance they all do. The shuffle dance I think it's called.

Makes them look like they only have one brain cell.

It's basically a 'LOOK AT ME' video and any comments about the jiggling boobs they are so desperate for everyone to look at are met with fake upset and distress!

Pathetic nonsense.

RainingRoses · 18/03/2025 10:28

Didn’t you do silly things as a teenager?

FartSock5000 · 18/03/2025 10:29

They do it because horny, lonely men watch those videos and 'engage' with the person posting them. This in turn gives that creator a monetary payment when they reach a certain number of followers who 'engage' by liking the vid, commenting or sharing it.

I suspect it is the internet, 2025 version of miming along to songs in the mirror, using a hairbrush as a microphone.

That said, the fact that so many are identifying themselves, and their schools, is definitely worrying. Don't they get taught about online safety these days?

LadyKenya · 18/03/2025 10:31

What is there to understand? Young people doing things for money, or enjoyment. There are lots of other interesting things to find out there.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 18/03/2025 10:46

It is cringe. Whatever about the people doing it, watching other people do it is pathetic.
