Can you expedite a passport if you've already sent it off as a standard application?

DH has received an email this morning telling him his new passport is going to take significantly longer than we thought it would, which will throw our travel plans into disarray! (Should've applied earlier, I know)

Once it's already actually in the system, does anyone know if you can retrospectively fast-track it?

He's going to ring the helpline this morning, but i wondered if anyone's been able to speed theirs up?

I did try this a few years back and was told no 😬 Sorry OP! Hopefully the turn around is faster than expected.

Has he received a generic email saying it will be shipped within 3 weeks etc or something personal to him? Turnaround times are usually very quick this time of year but they will only ever commit to the standard SLA. The clock starts ticking when the old passport is actually received too.

Anecdotally travel plans cut very little ice unless bereavement or similar.
