Only one book for me.
The Kite Runner.

OP posts:
TheOliveFinch · 16/03/2025 20:20

The beekeeper of Aleppo

blankittyblank · 16/03/2025 20:21

Shuggie Bain made me cry a few times. And Young Mungo too actually (both by Douglas Stuart)

I just read the hunted by Abir Mukherjee, and I was surprised how that affected me at the end

Normandy144 · 16/03/2025 20:22

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

Hangover square by Patrick Hamilton. Great book.

Also A Little Life, but I resented that.

Semiramide · 16/03/2025 20:23

Tess of the d'Urbervilles. It's been 50 years or so but I remember it like it was yesterday. Was never able to read it a second time...

TabloidFootprints · 16/03/2025 20:24

Mostly children's books when reading them to the kids - The Railway Children, The Children of Green Knowe, Alice in Wonderland (the end), Dogger....

I'm sure there have been adult books as I went through a stage of crying at anything, but I can't think which ones.

TroysMammy · 16/03/2025 20:24

Greyfriars Bobby. I sobbed my heart out reading the ending. I also sob my heart out watching the film and he doesn't die in that. I'm not even a dog person and I have never even had a dog.

wantmorenow · 16/03/2025 20:24

'Tis by Frank McCourt. The poverty. 😥

I get very tearful at A Little Princess.

Shuggie Bain
Dogger
Alfie’s Christmas

Slightly different genres there!

The Killing Fields. I was on a beach in Cyprus when I finished it. When I read the words "Stanley, I knew you'd come" it just made me weep. I've never been more pleased to be wearing sunglasses.

Years ago now, but I still can recall it.

ClaredeBear · 16/03/2025 20:29

the first chapter of The Lovely Bones. I cried and cried. It perfectly articulated a parent’s grief

WearyAuldWumman · 16/03/2025 20:31

I recall weeping the first time that I read the ending of "Of Mice and Men".

HeadNorth · 16/03/2025 20:32

The Incredible Journey - When Bodger emerges at the end - sob.
Half of a Yellow Sun - utterly harrowing

FuckssakeMulder · 16/03/2025 20:33

Stuart: A life backwards.

It’s a biography of a disabled man that was often homeless, in prison etc.

JimStirlingsPenisTransplant · 16/03/2025 20:33

I was immediately going to say The Kite Runner too, OP. It’s really stayed with me and inspired me to go into the work I do now actually.

AgathaMystery · 16/03/2025 20:34

The Bronze Horseman - Paulina Simons

everycowandagain · 16/03/2025 20:35

The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah. I don't often cry at books but I bawled my eyes out at the end.

YourChirpyFatball · 16/03/2025 20:35

The Women's Room

214 · 16/03/2025 20:36

Captain Corelli's Mandolin, I've re-read it a lot of times, so by now I know when I'm getting close to the specific part and I'm crying in anticipation. Such a wonderful book.

Frankincense88 · 16/03/2025 20:37

The Book Thief
The Help

Read them one after whilst sat around the pool in Greece on holiday about 12 years ago. I was a mess 😂

Also ‘Me Before You’ by Jojo Moyes.
Oh and when Dobby, Lupin and Tonks died in Harry Potter! 😭

Manzana · 16/03/2025 20:37

A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson, when I realised it was a what might have been, and Teddy was long gone

biscuitsandbooks · 16/03/2025 20:37

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

InALonelyWorld · 16/03/2025 20:39

How to lose an ex in 10 days
The Midnight Library

RenoDakota · 16/03/2025 20:41

The Bridges of Madison County. I finished it while sitting on a park bench and was a sobbing mess. Luckily no-one else around.
War Horse.
