I cry at everything! Lots from when I was a child/teenager but I shed a tear at most books I read. Anything with a dead parent is likely to briefly set me off.

Ones that stand out…

Harry Potter, obviously.
Good night Mr Tom
The wind on fire series
The Clan of the Cave bear
The Book Thief
Noughts and Crosses
One Day and Sweet Sorrows by David Nichols

lyricalwindmills · 16/03/2025 20:47

One Day by David Nicholls made me ugly cry on the tube.

and god yes to the Rob Delaney. I wept continuously for about 3 days. So sad, so beautiful.

Also one particular part of Shantaram, it was years ago but I remember lying on a beach in France crying!

The Bronze Horseman - Paulina Simons

I sobbed.

It resonated with me because I did Russian at uni and I studied in Leningrad for a term. The head of the Faculty of Russian for Foreigners had been a child during the war and she told us that when the thaw came, she had to help clear up the bodies in order to prevent an epidemic.

Molly70 · 16/03/2025 20:51

Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. I was glad I was at home as the tears would not stop

elliejjtiny · 16/03/2025 20:51

The good mother by Sinead moriarty

dogger

the fairy doll, from the my naughty little sister series. My mum used to refuse to read it to me because I would cry every time.

A Man Called Ove, read it many times and cry each time

Not seen the film yet, as much as I love Tom Hanks I just don't want it spoilt

The Bridges of Madison County. I finished it while sitting on a park bench and was a sobbing mess. Luckily no-one else around.
War Horse.

I read the Bridges of Madison County the night before I married! Possibly not the best choice - my eyes might have been a bit puffy the next morning.

A thousand splendid sun's
Tess of the d'urbervilles
Run baby run by Nicky Cruz

Ididntsaybanana · 16/03/2025 20:54

Not for a little while but I remember crying every time I picked up The Lovely Bones when I was a teenager. To be honest I wouldn't be any different now.

Tortielady · 16/03/2025 20:56

Portrait of a Lady - Henry James
The Mill on the Floss - George Eliot
Middlemarch - George Eliot
Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro

A Fine Balance. It’s an extraordinary and brilliant book and I am really pleased I have read it as parts of it are still with me 25 years later - but I don’t think I could manage to read it again.

NotMilanese · 16/03/2025 20:57

Charlotte's Web.
Last Pooh book as pp mentioned
The Velveteen Rabbit
The Last Battle (The last of the Narnia Chronicles by CS Lewis)

NiceKipperTie · 16/03/2025 20:59

A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning Wroe. I normally never get tearful reading books but this one made me made me cry on the bus!

Zeroperspective · 16/03/2025 20:59

My sisters keeper Jodi Picoult.
Makes me cry every single time, I hated they changed the ending in the film. I was sobbing away watching it and then when I got to the part where the ending was clearly going to be different from the book the tears dried up in my fury! I'm that annoying person that tuts and says it didn't happen like that in the book (Harry Potter I'm looking at you) but this is usually an internal tut and moan, with My Sisters Keeper it was very vocal and pure outrage 😠 even though I was watching it alone lol

Hotdayinjuly · 16/03/2025 21:00

Lots of these! Just to give one I haven’t seen mentioned, but the author has so she must have knack for it, The Women - Kristin Hannah.

mangoamango · 16/03/2025 21:01

The Blazing World by Siri Husvedt. Proper blubbing and tears streaming down my face. In the tram on the way to work. During rush hour.

Also,
Captain Corelli's Mandoline
The Fault in our Stars

Demon Copperhead was heartbreaking, and I'm not usually a crier.

EwwSprouts · 16/03/2025 21:03

Some of the above, also Old Yeller.

This one for me too. I’ve never cried so much reading a book. But it’s so lovely.
Ive seen the film you, and whilst they’ve changed details, to make it more American-centric, I think it eyes have the same feel as the book. And I cried at the film too 😭
