Black Beauty - Anna Sewell I read it when young and sobbed when Ginger died. Still get tears in my eyes when I re-read
Little Women - Louisa May Alcott. Still cry when Beth dies
The Shepherds Crown - Sir Terry Pratchett. Ugly crying because this was his last ever book

I’m not an avid reader so I’ve not read many books but Jude The Obscure had me crying. I was reading it in work on quiet nights (waitressing at the time) and had to keep putting it down to prevent myself sobbing in front of customers!

It is unremitting misery.

A Fine Balance completely destroyed me.

Half of a Yellow Sun was also devastating.

The Damage Done by Warren Fellows- completely harrowing.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/03/2025 21:13

I cried at the the ending of The Help, it was when the Adalaine left the little girl who loved her more than the girls actual mother die.
I cried my eyes out 😢

As a kid I cried when Zac died in goodnight Mr Tom.

God yes Maggie O Farrell when her lovely boyfriend is killed in a bomb. She’s crying on the tube and an old lady says “he’s not worth it”.

Also the book about the Lighthouse keeper cannot remember the name but my god I was sobbing at that on a cross channel ferry

TheaBrandt1 · 17/03/2025 21:16

The Light Between the Oceans. You cannot not cry at that.

Read them one after whilst sat around the pool in Greece on holiday about 12 years ago. I was a mess 😂

Also ‘Me Before You’ by Jojo Moyes.
Oh and when Dobby, Lupin and Tonks died in Harry Potter! 😭

Edited

Yes, The Book Thuef!
Hamnet - Maggie O’Farrell

MrPanks · 17/03/2025 21:41

Birdsong- Sebastian Faulks, heartbreaking ending, a WW1 story that captures the sheer brutality and futility of this war.

TheaBrandt1 · 17/03/2025 21:46

There’s an amazing piece in hamnet when she describes the germ that is killing her son how it originated far away but is now here killing him. Was reading it in the first lock down so hit hard.

Linnet · 17/03/2025 22:07

The light between oceans, I love that book, it’s one of my favourites, but it makes me cry every time.

One day by David Nicolls. I was a mess I’ve never read it again and I refused to watch the tv programme when it came out last year.

CharliesAngles · 17/03/2025 22:30

Has anyone read Freak the Mighty? My 6ft 1 DS just said this was the first book that made him cry.
