Yes, mine is quite simple. My starting country is always somewhere in the Middle East and then I work out from the distance whether or not I can eliminate the Americas and Oceania. Then go from there.

i often start with peru
perhaps i should change as above

I often start from Singapore as I have a reasonable idea of how far places are from it in terms of flying time, at 1000km/h. But it isnt a hard and fast rule. I started with India today. The middleseastern strategy, say starting with Turkey is difficult when the country is close to Turkey as there are too many small countries all around Turkey.

I start with a very small country with only one external border. Same one every time. I use other small countries (whose approx distance from the starting country I know) and I sort of triangulate from there.

I read one strategy of picking big countries first. The problem with that is, for example, China, has borders with 14 other countries so if the correct guess adjoins China there isn't a way of narrowing it down further.

That is a similar to my choice of Singapore. Do maritime boundaries work in a similar fashion to land borders? Because today's clues were wrong then. I picked a country that has maritime borders with the correct country but it was not marked as adjacent.

I always start with the UK, then my next guess depends on how dark the UK was, and go from there.

No they don't- I think Trinidad and Tobago was a recent answer and one of my guesses was the adjacent island. The distance was coast to coast.

Also remember sometimes seas and oceans are the shortest distance between countries. A few weeks ago, the country of the day was Montenegro. I guessed Italy and it said it was about 550km from the nearest border. Yes the Adriatic Sea is the 550km!

I start from central Africa and work my way around from there.

I use Lesotho and Djibouti as 'pointer' countries, but other than that I find Africa a bit problematic as most countries there border lots of others.

I do find it trickier when it ends up being a country in Africa! But when it’s not, the distances give me a good grasp of where it could be on other continents, if that makes sense.
